SCF Challenge - Team Pursuit
Following the rapid decline of the URA city centre criteriums, the SCF Challenge series is meant to be a new set of events to help fill the void. All being well, events should be every 2 months with different formats being tried.
The inaugural event was a Team Pursuit format. 2 teams racing on the hotdog circuit at the national stadium - on either side of the course. 4 laps at full gas for 7 minutes.
When it was initially announced, it said there was room for 8 teams only so I immediately went online to register and chope a place for the team. With the corners, I knew that I was a liability on the circuit and that the place could then be passed to a better bike handler. Sadly,due to the logistics of a Long day, no one stepped up and I ended up having to be the 4th man on the team. The final line up consisted of Hish, Keiichi, new boy Gernot and myself.
We were the first to race at 6:50 against Thirty Forty. Our tactics were a mess and we blew apart on every corner with me being dropped on lap 2. Still our time was ok and we won comfortably. Most importantly our time was in the TOP 4 of the 12 teams which meant we were straight into the Quarter Finals and could go for coffee.
In the Quarters, we changed the tactics. As I couldn’t stay on during the corners, we agreed that I would do the first lap for the team. My role was to take it up and drill the first lap before dropping out. This worked much better and we beat SCF Development Squad easily.
In the semis, we were drawn against the Matadors. They’d fielded a strong team, all on aero bars and had the best times of the day. We did some good times 7:10 but they still put 5 seconds into us. Anza ended up facing them in the final - but with slower qualification times than us.
We had to do a final round against Integrated Riding to select the final podium slot. Our timing was good and we improved down to 7:08 to take 3rd. Matadors won the day with 6:55 with Anza getting 7:13 in the final.
It was a good fun day. A lot of sitting around but worth it overall. Next time, I’ll make sure not to put my hand up for the racing part.
