Where would one find information on front yard alternatives for one's area?
First thing you gotta do is find out what’s legal in your area- some towns/municipalities have actual rules against native plants, and if you’re part of a HOA (homeowner’s association), you’re probably out of luck. Lots of people who have tried to have a more natural yard have gotten in legal trouble and forced by their city to mow down the native plants; here’s one example of that. The problem is that most cities just say that your lawn can’t be a “nuisance,” but then they don’t actually define what that means.
However, there’s ways to get around that. One way that usually doesn’t cause much trouble is by ripping out the grass, putting down gravel, and then doing container gardens or mulched beds like this. Another way is by having a trimmed meadow lawn, but even then the city- and neighbors- might get picky. I would suggest googling “wild lawn + [your area]” to see what’s already been done because the rules vary so widely across the board.
