Lingering signs of the 1969-1971 "Indians of All Tribes" occupation of Alcatraz. Indian rights and unity was a key focus of the occupants and they wanted to establish an American Indian centre on the island, after the state penitentiary had been closed down six years earlier. The occupation lasted for 18 months and is supposedly considered a milestone in Native American history. A re-awakening of culture, traditions, identity and spirituality. Each year natives of all tribes return on Columbus Day and Thanksgiving to commemorate the occupation. The "AN" on the first photo is from when the sign used to read: Welcome "United Indian Property" #indiansofalltribes #alcatraz #occupationofalcatraz #nativeamerican #thanksgiving #sanfrancisco2017
