For this last week of our OCIN Viewpoints ocean awareness project we touch on what we can do as a global team, as a community, and as individuals to protect the ocean. The giveaway this week is something special that we are so stoked to share with you. To end off our ocean awareness project — OCIN Viewpoints — we will be giving away a piece from our new category: a hoodie from our very own OCIN sweatsuit program.⠀ ⠀ For a long time, we’ve been wanting to create a piece of clothing that articulated this thought that we truly believe in: that although we are each rooted in individuality and incredible uniqueness, there are also themes that connect us and unite us. At our core, we are humans, friends, and (for our OCIN collective in particular), ocean lovers, and we wanted to celebrate that. ⠀ ⠀ And, with the help from some amazing people in our community, we’ve designed a whole sweatsuit set around this energy.⠀ ⠀ We reached out to our long-term friends at Reigning Champ @reigningchamp — the makers of premium athletic wear founded out of our home city as well —who provided us with a pull-over hoodie, a cuffed sweat pant, and sweat short from their core collection of quality midweight terry. Our good friend and immensely respected designer Kenta Goto @write_left did up our graphic in our Jade Green. And, then we took it to Good Print Co., where each piece is individually screen printed by the hands of our talented pal (and sometimes model: check our OCIN ecomm), Ben Knight @sol.signs @goodprintco ⠀ It’s truly a project from the heart, from a collective of creative souls, aspiring to connect our bodies and minds. We hope you feel it too.⠀ ⠀ Our sweatsuit program launches in limited quantities, with pre-orders starting online on Monday August 3. This week marks the end of our ocean awareness project with our last Viewpoints Bullet Note! We’ve spent the past few weeks learning about the ocean, its current threats, and unpacking the ways in which climate and race intersect. We wanted to end off this month with what you can do to take action, and to be a friend and protector of the ocean. We will also dig into our curiosity of what lies beneath, and meet some fascinating deep water pals.⠀ ⠀ Learn about steps we can take as a community and individuals to fight climate change. Why is supporting local and zero-waste living so important? In this week’s Viewpoint we learn that environmental racism refers to the ways that waste, pollution, and the climate crisis disproportionately impact Black people, Indigenous Peoples, and other people of color​.⠀ ⠀ Segregation of ethnic minorities in dangerous jobs, increased likelihood of being exposed to hazardous waste, and a lack of access to environmental amenities (e.g. parks and playgrounds) are just a few examples of environmental racism in action.​ ⠀ ⠀ Fossil-fueled power plants, refineries, landfills and other toxic waste locations inexplicably fall along racial lines in our communities. When we recognize that climate change is not simply an environmental issue, but a humanitarian crisis, the interconnectedness of the systems at play becomes clear.⠀ ⠀ A few facts about Environmental Racism:⠀ * In the US, more than 55% of those that live within 3km of hazardous waste facilities are people of color.​⠀ * 40% of people who live critically close to hazardous chemical facilities are Black or Latinx.​⠀ * Black people are exposed to 50% more air pollution than white people​.⠀ * Communities with more people of color are 40% more likely to have unlawfully unsafe drinking water.​ ⠀ ⠀ Read the full Bullet Note with our references and resources on our IG Highlights “BN3- Giveaway”. We’re going into our third week of Viewpoints – we hope it’s been sparking curiosity and maybe some interesting conversations on your side. So far, we’ve learned a little bit about our oceans, how we’re connected to water, and some of the threats harming this beautiful ecosystem that we need to survive. This week we start to look into how everything connects: what intersectional environmentalism is, why climate justice is social justice and how we cannot fight one without advocating for the other, and some resources we can learn from to better understand and dig deeper into being an activist for our people and our planet. ⠀ ⠀ This week is complemented with another giveaway, this time, with our friends @theearthgroup and @monostravel . With pollution at an all time high, if we continue down the path we’re headed, the ocean may not be ours to enjoy for much longer.⠀ ⠀ Imagine what it would be like if our beaches became an extension of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, or our seafood became so to is to the point of being inedible. What if we could no longer enjoy the activities we love like swimming, surfing, or just being able to experience and touch the water safely? What if the entire world no longer had a clean water source to bathe, clean, drink, and cook with? (the latter, a devastating concern to the health and livelihood of communities in developing countries, where unfortunately still today, clean water is not accessible.) ⠀ ⠀ If we don’t act now, this may very well be the future we are realizing for ourselves.
