“then how do you ever get to know someone?” he asked, baffled. “isn’t that the foundation to building a relationship?”

“maybe,” she shrugged, “but I have everyone I need. I have moms, dad, siblings, a guy for sex. what else could I need?”

“friends? a relationship for more than sex?”

“why, do you want to be my boyfriend?”

“hmm,” he hummed, thinking of all the possible questions he could ask this riddle wrapped in a mystery girl. she was almost ready to turn back to her painting when he finally landed on one, “when’s your birthday?”

she raised an eyebrow. really, that’s the question you pick? but he grinned, expectantly waiting for her answer. she sighed, then smiled softly, “august.”

lip flinched back at the sight of andie, who was sitting on the couch, back curved as she was reading something,  “yo.” lip startled andie, making her jump and let out a startled gasp, hand going to her chest as she looked over her shoulder to see her brother coming into the house,  “jesus, lip, what the fuck?” andie whispered out. “what the fuck me? what the fuck you?” lip responded, waving his hand at his sister, “why you awake? it’s like two am.” “it’s the only time the house is quiet enough for me to get some work done.” andie waved her textbook up in the air, “everyone’s either asleep or out. what’s your excuse?” andie raised her eyebrows at her twin, waiting to see what he came up with. “nothing, don’t worry about it.” lip shook his head. he paused for a moment, hand going into his pocket, “up for a break?” he asked, pulling out a pack of cigarettes and shaking them slightly. andie raised her eyebrows and nodded. she pushed her books off of her lap, carefully closing them before storing them under the cushions just in case frank came stumbling in. she didn’t need him rolling around on her carefully printed notes and equations. then she grabbed her jacket from the coat rack before following lip out to the back porch and into the cold winter night.

“you don’t even know anything about me.” rachel mused, twisting her fingers in between derek’s. “so tell me something.” derek responded, looking down at where rachel was laying against his side, his arm around her. he watched her screw her mouth to the side and went to add, “it can be something simple.” she looked up at him, brows furrowing. “like what?” “like...” derek let out a breath and moved his head around a bit, “when’s your birthday?” he gave the most simple question he could think of. rachel studied him for a moment, almost as if even that was too deep of a question for her. “august.” she finally, simply stated, turning her face away from him and shifting down against him. derek couldn’t help the small smile quirking up at her response, noting how she didn’t elaborate with a date -- that would have to be another question on another night.
