#Jesus The “they” in this verse refers to the three wise men. After being told about Jesus’ birth, they traveled far in order to meet Jesus. When they did, a beautiful display of worship followed. They each gave Him a gift. Now gold, frankincense, & myrrh seem like weird gifts for a baby. Why not diapers instead? However, these gifts further declare Jesus as the Messiah & King! First, Gold. Gold is something you give royalty, specifically a king. It is valuable. However, giving gold to a child shows a lot of Faith. The Israelites were expecting their messiah to be some sort of king with military might. They wanted someone to rule their country, not their hearts. Yet, God sent Jesus to live & die on the cross for our sins. Thanks to Him, we can have a deep relationship with God, something far better than what a military ruler could accomplish. Even more so is Jesus resurrecting with all Authority in His Hand. Truly, He is worthy of the gold presented. Frankincense is what priests burned in temples in order to worship God. They also mixed it with other oils to anoint new priests. Giving this signified Jesus as being the High Priest Who’s life is acceptable in God’s sight. Therefore His death would be acceptable and enough to pay for all of our sins. Myrrh was an embalming oil used for the dead. It is the worst possible gift for a child. But for Jesus, it prophesied His future death & suffering that would pay off all of mankind’s debt. The best part is that death isn’t the end. Jesus comes back with all Authority & power, beating death & the devil. This is why we are able to have eternal life with Him. Tomorrow is Christmas. Many of us may gather online or offline to celebrate. Before we eat, drink & be merry, let us take a moment to reflect on Jesus’ coming down to earth. Let us thank God for sending His Son. Let’s worship as the wise men did. God did too much for us not to worship Him. It can be with joyful shouts or quiet stillness, but let God know that you dedicate your life, your all to Him today in Jesus Name.
