Tuesday night was the last Odd Salon for the foreseeable future due to Covid and unfortunate circumstances of our founder.
I looked back and I have given SEVEN! talks. Mostly unrecorded unfortunately, but here's one of my favorites on human/animal chimaeras/"hybrids." They take about a day to research and put together, but only <10 minutes to watch, and you can speed it up, because it's on Youtube.
Odd Salon Fellow Kristin Hugo will be sharing with us the history and art of the stencil. So get ready to get to use your hands and make a stencil.
I’m doing another Odd Salon event tomorrow. This time I’ll teach you a little about the history of stencils/street art, how to do it, and we’ll be making a stencil together. This event is free for Odd Salon members and fellows, but if you’re not that and can’t afford to be a Patreon patron (you can join for as little as $1 a month) you can DM me and I’ll send the code to get in free. Take a walk in the Cemetery of Dead Science—look at debunked science from pasts both distant and recent and dig into the scientific process to better understand how questionable concepts can gain legitimacy.
Tonight I’m doing my first virtual Odd Salon happy hour with the Exploratorium, and it’s free! So join in at 8pm Mountain Time (lol does anyone here go by that, fine, it’s 10 East Coast and 7 West Coast USA.) That’s in 30 minutes! (no you don’t have to be on camera, you just watch me talk about terrible dinosaur art)

Odd Salon: Resilient
Odd Salon is a social, interactive lecture series focused on weird history, science and culture, making a great community of smart weirdos in San Francisco and New York.
For obvious reasons, recent salons have been cancelled. Now we’re back at it with an online Odd Salon on May 26, 6pm PDT, with the theme of RESILIENT. Also, while tickets are usually $20, for the first time there are free tickets (if you would like some extra perks there are other options.) Here’s the content description:
Even during the worst of days of history - then as now - individuals have stepped up to make a difference, communities have rallied together, unlikely heroes have emerged, and resilient art forms have flowered, inspired and informed by the shared experience endured. Join speakers from both the San Francisco and New York City chapters for an evening exploring stories of strength, silver linings, and kicking ass during some of history's darkest chapters.

Here’s my Odd Salon talk about Coyotes! I hope I did the topic justice....it’s really huge and political and I’d love to hear your thoughts about it but please try not to rant without a clear point lol.
Odd Salon is an SF/NYC series of events where people give powerpoints about the history of something weird. It’s interactive and you get to meet some of the coolest smart/weird people.
Human/Animal chimeras make for dramatic cinema and are now, in their own way, real. We can blur the line between man and beast. As well, the line between fantasy and reality.

NYC: I’m giving my fourth (and probably final) presentation at Odd Salon on Wednesday! Six speakers will speak on the subject of “chimera” in a semi-interactive theater environment in the Lower East Side.
My talk will, of course, focus on the science and scifi of human/animal hybrids.
Odd Salon is starting a chapter in New York City and looking for speakers! If you’d like to give a talk/presentation in NYC (or San Francisco, where the chapter has been established for years) you can submit your topic ideas here.
The topic that you talk about should be something odd and historical, like the biography of an important figure or object. I did one for the “Afterlives” edition where I talked about "stories in bone,” and you can see more examples on their Youtube page.
The theme for the next San Francisco event is Discovery and the theme for the 2019 kick-off show in NYC is “Fierce.” For this one in NYC, they’re looking for women/trans/femme/gnc speakers to talk about “women throughout history who who are FEIRCE as fuck, have defied cultural expectations, embraced their agency, and written their own stories.” As always, the topic should have an origin that started some time before WWII. If you have an idea that doesn’t fit this one’s theme, submit it anyway and they’ll consider you for the future.
IMO it’s a great experience, especially because once you give a talk you’re forever a “fellow” with a bunch of other smart weirdos. Sometimes we do cool stuff like free trips to Ripley’s and cemetery tours.
