What’s your favorite oddity you have?
Ooh good question! I’m gonna do this one in order of oddest, most expensive, and favorite!
Oddest: Human. Ashes. Earrings. Now I know how insane that sounds. We were at an oddities shop and a pair of earrings caught my eyes, I thought it would be like an animal or wood or something (literally anything else) and the owner just casually dropped oh those are human! He explained to me how his friends dad had passed away and was an atheist and told his son he did not care what he did with his ashes… well his son is an artist and turned him into earrings and was sad no one had bought them at the market the owner had hosted the night prior. This tugged on my heart strings 😭 such a unique piece, I without hesitation said I’d take them. So now this dudes dad just hangs out in my curio cabinet. Out of respect tho I will not post photos of them ❤️
Most Expensive: OOAK Doll. This was a FB marketplace find in LA. This doll had evoked such an emotion in me. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so strongly about anything in my collection. It’s unsettling to many, some even might think it satanic demanding that the previous owner destroy it. However I find it endearing and sweet. And in my opinion it’s very misunderstood. It was a display piece by an artist who lives on the other side of America, so it’s incredible to think about how many hands he’s been through. And there is such an interesting story behind it and the guy I got him from. I am currently in the process of restoring him to his former glory because the years have worn him down, he is almost 18 years old. When I reached out to the artist it was such a tender moment because she thought he’d been destroyed and lost contact with the original buyer. I will display him in my room when I finish restoring him, I would also like the artists blessing to post him on my platform as well. I will not be sharing how much I spent on him though 😅 just know he is the most expensive piece I own as of now.
Favorite: My “At Rest” casket plate. I have it resting above my bed. I’m obsessed because I feel it’s the most perfect thing to have above a bed LMFAO 😭
I absolutely love oddities because I have so many stories and have met so many interesting people throughout my collecting journey. I find so much beauty in death, but also so much beauty in the living who carry on the legacy and create pieces that will outlive them. It’s been so fulfilling for me and it’s genuinely one of my biggest motivations in life 🫶 I want to continue collecting, learning, and telling their stories. It gives me satisfactory purpose in life.
