Pure Intentions

Bruuno did more interviews on his own than he did with others. Occasionally, band members would join him. Usually Wicket. Very rarely Dakota. Today happened to be one of those very rare days where Dakota was coerced into joining him. She sat a respectable distance away from the fuchsia. Bruuno was leaning back into the couch with his arms draped behind the duo; Dakota didn't seem too pleased with it. She didn't seem too pleased in general. She wore a short sleeved black shirt with the band's beloved floral logo. Shorts showed off her thigh tattoo, and her hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail. Bruuno looked the same as usual; hair down with cargo shorts and a tank to show off his own tattoos. The duo were quote colorful sitting next to each other. It was funny seeing them sit beside each other, so uniquely colorful and vastly different, both wearing a shirt with a logo that Dakota had designed. At this point, Bruuno trusted Dakota to do the designs. 

Odesea watched from behind the cameras. Bruuno had invited her along because she liked seeing what the music industry was like from the rock scene. It was different from the orchestra world. Everyone was friendlier, less likely to tear you apart over a mistake.  He also mentioned that her being there would make Dakota more willing to sit with him. Odesea wasn't entirely sure why, but she was happy to be there regardless! Being behind the cameras was different. Unique. She was used to facing away from the crowd and directing the action; here she was, part of the crowd! She rather enjoyed watching her two friends. She thought Bruuno looked better in the blue lights of an orchestra set-up, but the bright whites of the setup here wasn't that bad. Dakota looked perfect. One leg crossed over the other, hands folded in her lap, her striking take-no-shit eyes staring down the interviewer; Dakota was perfect. 

Odesea almost felt underdressed. She got distracted by her outfit for a brief moment. She pulled her jacket down to cover her thigh a bit more. As she did, one of the trolls brushed by her, almost knocking her into the camera's view. Some nameless troll was quick to pull her back by her jacket, helping her steady once more. Cheeks warm, Ode muttered a soft apology. When she looked back to her friends, Dakota's eyes were on her. Bruuno was talking about something regarding one of their songs. But Dakota was looking at her. Oh shit, Dakota's looking at her. 

Did she see that? Oh gosh, how embarrassing. Odesea's face got warmer. She pulled her jacket sleeves over her palms and brushed a strand of hair behind her fin. Stay cool, Ode. A sparkle off to the side caught her attention briefly. She was able to cool down in a moment's notice. Odesea was called back to the interview when she heard Dakota speak up. She was correcting Bruuno on something about one of their newer songs. 

"Actually…." 

Odesea didn't hear the rest. Distracted would be a good word, entranced would be better. She became entranced by the way the light danced off Dakota's piercings. Especially when she spoke. Her lip piercing helped to punctuate her points; her dimple piercings sparkled. Or so Odesea thought. Her eyes were drawn down to Dakota's arms, where her various colorful tattoos spoke to her. Odesea found herself wondering how Dakota's skin felt. A deep desire to trace over the intricate rose designs along her shoulders rose in Ode's chest. Even the red-blood tattoo on Dakota's other arm spoke to Odesea. She wanted to run her fingertips along the patterns. She wanted to comb her fingers through her teal-tipped hair. She wanted to press a kiss to the stars on Dakota's neck. It wasn't a lustful desire; she wanted to make Dakota feel seen and heard. Take in every aspect of the tealblood's person and make her feel whole. Dakota's voice drowned out the sound of the interviewer and even Bruuno. Her voice was calm, steady, confident. Even if Odesea wasn't paying attention to the words she said, she loved the sound of Dakota's voice. The way it resonated in the room. Dakota was probably amazing at singing, Ode though, there was no way she could be bad at it. Was she bad at anything? She looked perfect, she sounded perfect. And she made Odesea feel many different things. Especially in their moments together, alone, back stage. Where Dakota talked to Ode like she was an actual troll worth talking to.

Odesea realized she had been staring doe-eyed directly at Dakota. Her face wasn't warm, but her chest felt fluttery. Something inside her ached to be known by Dakota. Be something more than just a friend of a friend. She loved hearing Dakota talk, especially when she spoke about music. Dakota always had such smart and intriguing things to add to the conversation! Ode longed to hear her speak more. Ode longed for more quiet moments with Dakota, where she could know her. The side of her that she didn't show the cameras. Maybe Dakota had some tattoos that nobody had seen before. At least, nobody worth mentioning. Odesea longed to be worth mentioning. She looked down at her hands for a moment. How would Dakota's hands feel entangled with her own? Odesea looked back to Dakota, stating at her hands that were still resting on her thighs. Odesea sighed softly. Her hands looked perfect. Not soft; no, she knew better than to expect a bassist's hands to be soft. But perfect to hold. 

Odesea was ripped away from yearning in Dakota's direction by the quiet vibration of her palmhusk. She slipped it from her jacket pocket and saw Actaea had texted her after she missed a call. She excuses herself quietly, heading out the smoking exit to call her beloved friend. 

"Tea! Hi- I'm sorry I missed your first call. Hm? Yeah….I'm at an interview with Bruuno and that girl I mentioned. Mhm, the really pretty teal with the tattoos."

Stage Fright

The lights were bright and hot. They  had been shut off during the sound check prior, and now they were on full blast. Beating down on your face, making you feel even more flushed. 

"You've done this thousands of times before, Ru. You got this!" Odesea's cheerful voice startled you as she came up from behind. Her gentle hand rested on your lower back. You offer a nervous smile in return.

"I've done like…..concerts….not….concerts." your voice feels small, stuck in your chest. You hug the old baritone saxophone to your chest. The instrument always felt like the perfect fit in your arms. It was cool against your scarred skin. 

"They're the same thing, my dear! What's got you so nervous? Is it that you wrote this song? Or that you're on your own?" Her fins twitched curiously as she spoke. It was always so cute to you. 

"Both, I guess? I haven't really...practiced much...I really 'ppreciate you comin', Seasea. I know jazz ain't yer thing…" 

"Nonsense. It's your thing, so it's my thing! You got this, dude. I'll be in the crowd. Front row. If you get nervous, just remember what Mr.Verace said! Imagine everyone in their underwear." 

You give a halfhearted laugh, "Did he really say that? There's some trolls out there I wouldn't mind picturin' in their delicates." You can't resist the urge, and end up winking at her despite your nerves. Her face flushes a deep violet. The blush hides the markings on her face. 

Before she could respond, Maesun came up and dragged you off to the side of the stage. You look over your shoulder and watch Odesea jump off the stage and return to the crowd. It was difficult to see her through the bright lights. 

You were directed to stay off to the side while Vivace Verace, famous jazz musician and your personal mentor, spoke to the crowd. He introduced you as THE Bruuno Sinopa. As if you were famous. You'd never get that lucky. But it was fun to pretend that this was a real concert! Not just some dinky recital that trolls had to attend for credits in their classes. Mr.Verace was still talking when Maesun poked your arm and brought you back to Alternia. Vivace always had a way with the crowd. He cracked jokes, got them laughing, and put everyone in good spirits. Maesun tuned your saxophone, and you did the same for their tenor. Once everything was situated, you step back out into the blinding lights. 

Panic. Your fins instantly go flat, and you feel weak in the knees. Maesun had to nudge you to get you in place. When Mae realizes you're not about to speak to the crowd, they step forward and do so for you. They introduce themselves as your backing instrumentalist, and explain these are pieces you've written for your composition classes.

In the meantime, you take a deep breath. Inhale, exhale. You fiddle with the keys of your sax, the sound of the pearls clicking was always soothing. You close your eyes. You open them again when Maesun stops talking and returns beside you. Their grey eyes meet yours and you nod. 

You bring the reed up to your mouth. Maesun does the same. Instead of giving the visual cue to start…..you puff out your cheeks and make an ungodly honking sound. It startled Maesun, making them jump and shake their head. The small crowd laughs behind the curtain of lights. 

You did that! you made them laugh! You made this audience feel something just by existing! You might've made someone's day by doing that. And that thought alone is enough to make the rest of your stage fright melt away. Maesun brings the mouthpiece back to their lips and you wait just a moment. The visual cue is simple, you nod your saxophone to the tempo you want to go at. Once started, you don't really want to stop. 

After the concert was finished, you jump down off the stage. Anguil hadn't been able to come, and neither could Kam. So it was just Odesea waiting for you. She stood up on her tip toes so she could adjust your fuchsia-colored bowtie. 

"You did great, Ru! You also managed to scare the little old lady sitting next to me. But you did great nonetheless, my dear. You're a real natural in the spotlight!" Odesea's smile was bright, but yours was brighter. You run a hand through your hair nervously. You never wanted to stop the feeling of performing. It was like an adrenaline rush. You felt free behind those lights. All the eyes in the world were on you but you were free. Not confined to the restraints of a broken system, no terrible lusus in your way. You were free. And your beloved saxophone held the key to that freedom. 

Playing your saxophone made you feel something you rarely ever felt. A sense of peace, and ease. The static in your brain shut up when you were playing. And being onstage, showing others that you aren't a useless fuck-up and you are capable of something great…? It was cathartic. 

You snap back to reality when Odesea pulls you down close, cupping your face. You realize then you had started to cry. 

"What's wrong, Ru? You did so good….what's up?" Her voice was soft and gentle. 

"I just….never wanna stop performin'." 

"Then don't!"
