Just finished watching Tom Hiddleston’s Pompeii series.
Tom: Pompeii isn’t a place. It’s a people.
Me: Did he just…? Yes, yes he did.

Going back to my MCU Odin hate phase because while I dislike the MCU for some many reasons I specially dislike their Odin.
Mythology Odin is one of the most fascinating pagan gods ever. Even coming from a culture that had so much lost because of christianity he still shaped the european popular understanding considerably. Not only that he is my favorite european pagan god (now non european pagan gods are on general all more interesting to me but still). I specially love his ravens representing "thought" and "memory" and it's symbolic in an almost sad way how memory is considered the most important when so much about norse mythology was forgotten.
And so when I am reminded that MARVEL turned him into that is already eyebrown raisIng but MCU Odin is honestly another level of incompetent and also such a bad father. I mean mythology Odin absolutely played favorites but to be fair every single being in existed (besides Loki) had Balder as their favorite person ever. Also Loki as an annoying adoptive younger brother does mean Odin is way less responsible for all that and before murdering Balder Loki mostly caused problem for Loki. He was avtually otherwise quite usefull. Like I do think Odin punishment for him was waaay too harsh but I mean who knows how those mythos even were before christianity put theur fingertips on it.
Anyway Odin is a terrible father and unlike someone like Lionel Luthor from SV he isn't even entertaining or interresting while being so and he is at least partially responsible for so much damage because of how bad he fucked up his three kids (Thor gets better completly unrelated to Odin and I stopped before it but I assume the same for Loki).
Also I accidentaly saw clips of an What If episode were Odin didn't raise Loki and besides Loki being well happier the episode lowkey heavilly implies Loki was not supposed to be a runt before Odin took him (I will go w late bloomer that never bloomed because he was in a different enviroment) and Laufey did want his son and would raise him. And while I think is just bad writing and forgetting previously stabelished facts it does paint Odin in an waaay worse light.
“You are unworthy of the loved ones you have betrayed.”
And whilst those are Odin’s words to Thor, the fact it pans to Loki right after, who is stood silently, looking between his father & brother as he realises those words also apply to him.
He already felt unworthy, but now, Odin’s words have put the last nail in the coffin. But he feels guilt. Guilt that Thor is getting punished for something he orchestrated - whether he meant it to go as far as it did or not. He knew what Thor was like and must’ve had an idea on how his reckless brother would react.
And this is all before he finds out the truth about his heritage.
And so after, slowly that guilt turns into grief and anger. Anger for the fact that it doesn’t matter what he did, he would never be seen as worthy.
This line from Odin is what aided Loki’s decision to prove himself worthy to his loved ones. He betrayed them, yes, but for the greater good. At least, that’s what he tells himself. He betrayed them, yes, but he wanted to prove that he was one of them, that he didn’t align with Laufey nor the Jotuns.
“You are unworthy of the loved ones you have betrayed.”
Those words have stuck with Loki ever since, I fear.
My personal opinion is that Actually, Loki acts exactly like Odin did when he was younger and That's Why no one in Asgard called him out while he was faking being Odin
They just thought that grief had made Odin have a mid life crisis to before he was an asshole and they weren't about to intervene beyond causally recommending grief counsellors
While, like many others, I am not fond of MCU!Oden and very much on the "he's a shit dad" train However, I will never really agree with the idea that he forcefully stole Loki from his home. I do believe that he took Loki to be used against Laufey, but I don't doubt that he didn't feel bad for seeing Loki alone, wherever he was left
But that's just how I feel :P
Worst Dad Showdown: Impossible Edition
Zeus (Percy Jackson)
Odin (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
how the hell did odin raise three children with the exact same problem of lacking a sense of self outside of their "purpose"
New headcanon: Odin never told Loki about his true parentage and Odin’s wish that he would inherit the Jotunheim throne because Odin realized that he’d accidentally raised a theater kid.
Odin: I am afraid Frigga, my love, that he must never know.
Frigga: Why not? He was born to be a king.
Odin: But he’s really annoying. The Jotun would never listen to him. They’d stab him in his sleep the first time he made them put on a show.
Frigga: 😬 Good point. We will never speak of it again.
