I am going to make an assumption and say you are worried about the optics of it all with the artist and by extension, me who reblogged their content. Your concern has been noted and appreciated, however I will keep acting as I’ve acted so far. Below, under read more for people’s convenience, is my extensive thoughts on this kind of things.
Here is my view: I see a piece of art from the artist and if I really like it and it relates to my blog, I reblog it. I will not look into the background of the said artist, nor do I see myself approving or condemning their political views, that they might theoretically express through their art. Some will disagree with me on this, but in my opinion when it comes to consuming media, with the amount of content we are shown and that we process through daily, we cannot be held to such a standard. It is an outrageous purity test that anyone and everyone will eventually fail by accident or intention, so to accept it is to be foolish, or a hypocrite.
That is that on the general topic. And now for the more intriguing issue in my view, the particular imagery you referenced as a source of concern.
The usage of Nazi imagery. What is Nazi imagery and what is German imagery? Is there a difference? And if there is not, did the Nazi party manage to taint a certain way of dressing up as “evil” by virtue of looking the similar?
Big questions. Way above my meager pay grade. But I am going to go out and say that things such as their dress code and for example the talent with which they created their propaganda films and promotional material is not inherently evil. They were tools that were made to serve their agenda. I don’t perceive these tools as evil or vile.
I come from a country that wore uniforms very similar to Germans, yet we did not subscribe to the political beliefs of the Nazi party of Nazi Germany, and that went double for eugenics portion. As such, my country’s history has those same uniforms, that same cross in it’s iconography, and they look gorgeous to my eye. Old fashioned, maybe menacing when in dark colors, but they are stylish products of their time. As such, when I see someone take a stylish uniform from the time when our world was at war, and give it to one of the greatest military commanders of Runeterra, I swoon in adoration at the talent of the artist.
Once more I remind you, this is not an attack or condemnation. I am thankful for the thought behind the message. But I will not change my stance and I have reasons not to.
