As though from far away, he hears a voice mention an ambulance, a phone call, a doctor— Someone asks a question too quiet to be heard. “Tripped,” someone says. Legolas knows the name, but cannot bring it to mind.
“I didn’t know Elves tripped,” says another voice, rough like the others, their consonants sharp and harsh as all Khuzdul speakers’ are.
“I did not trip,” grits out the Elf. “I was tripped. We are as susceptible to that as you.” An uneasy shifting of feet and hands and clothes follows. Legolas opens an eye and looks up to the Dwarf prince bending over him, Fíli’s bright eyes wide in concern. “Never again,” he manages, struggling to make no sound nor sign of pain, “will I play a game of kickball. This is an appalling sport, and the keg of beer cannot—” Legolas bites down the next words as his voice cracks. He swallows hard. “—cannot improve the safety of it.”
