"Believe it or not, you’re attractive and you’ve always been there for me…" Liam shifted then dropped his gaze "even if I’m the idiot that fucks things up."
"You're not," he replied immediately, not allowing the thought linger for one more second, "You're not an idiot, Liam. It's just... circumstances. You know what I mean." He scratched his head. He was still trying to find the right way to refer to Liam's I.E.D. without being offensive.

The dead pool was put to an end. Just as Brett thought that it was time to take a break, Liam told him that Scott was missing, and that he was going to Mexico with the McCall's pack. Before Brett could start to convince him to stay, the boy stopped replying. Everything was done via text, and that put Brett into a few hours of intense anxiety, wondering if Liam was alright. His alpha questioned his reasons for being so worried. He had no answer to her question.
When Liam finally replied, meaning that they had returned from Mexico, Brett called and actually had an hour long conversation with the other on the phone. He didn't tell him that he was worried, not even once, but it was evident in his actions. Liam was tired, and Brett finally (eventually) let him rest, but he made a point to catch the next day.
He tried to keep up to that promise, and now time had passed, it was almost a month after the incident. He kept in touch with Liam, despite everything, and his worrying merely grew worse when he learnt that Scott, being the true yet young alpha he was, totally didn't think through before biting his first own beta.
"I don't know," he met Liam at this diner, the place they used to go quite often back in the good Devenford days, "I mean, yea, he's a good guy, but I don't know." They were talking about Scott again, and while Brett had the utmost respect for the other, he felt like it was still a fault, considering the difficult situation Liam was put into.

Things hadn't always been so bad between Brett and Liam. In fact, it started off pretty much perfect, even for the wrong reasons, but still, they got a long quite well. The whole Devenford team got along quite well. Liam was the youngest member on the team, and they decided to throw a party to break the ice.
They gathered at one of the boy's place (Brett's place was the first choice, like always; but as always, he never agreed to have the team over) and there was a bit of everything -- loud music, booze, pizza and excited teens. Some teammates brought their other half along as well, and the living room was crowded.
Brett was still wondering if Liam could make it over, so he texted.
[ text: Liam ] are you coming?
