What's Up With The Geico Cavemen???
I was peering through the window of a log cabin recently when I happened to catch an ad for Geico car insurance which featured the Geico Cavemen. First off, I find it offensive the way the "Cavemen" are portrayed as sub-human, somehow inferior in intelligence and sophistication. I know that's the whole point of the gag, but that doesn't make it any less hurtful.
This derogatory depiction aside, my biggest disappointment has more to do with the aesthetic choices made by the creators of the commercials. It seems to me great care was taken to give these "Cavemen" very Bigfoot-like features. Anyone who knows the first thing about history and evolution will tell you that Bigfoot are nothing like the so-called caveman -- completely different branches of the evolutionary tree. And yet, there we see these half-witted "Cavemen" with the shaggy hair and protruding brow of my species. I find it hard to believe this happened by coincidence and I have to think they made these decisions to, at least subconsciously, play off the massive popularity of Bigfoot. In which case, this makes these ads a shameless co-optation of my kind in the service of shilling cheap auto coverage.
I therefore call on all good citizens, regardless or species affiliation, to boycott Geico car insurance until they cease airing these offensive ads.
