How do you make an offering with food? Do you burn it? Eat it? I'm so confused.

Hey, anon! So, there are lots of ways to make food offerings. Over time, I've practiced three specifically, and I'll outline those for you. As a caveat, I'm a non-conventional Hellenist, so there are definitely things in here that aren't going to go along with traditional Greek writings.

Below are three different methods for offering food.

First Way: Burnt Offerings

I have a metal bowl out on my balcony that I use for burnt offerings. When I was doing this consistently, I kept a small wooden bowl in my kitchen with a tissue lining it. Anything that fell on the floor and the first bite of every meal was put inside that bowl as offerings to be burnt. If I were making something like soup, I'd put some of the raw ingredients into the bowl instead of the actual soup (liquids are hard to burn the way that I do it).

When night came and I went outside for my evening prayers, I'd bunch up the tissue and put it into the metal bowl. I then poured a moderate amount of lamp oil onto it (anything properly flammable will work) and used a stick of flaming incense to light the contents of the bowl. I usually focused on the fire and offered up my thanks after things were lit.

Second Way: Devoted then Devoured

In some traditions, food offerings are given and then, after an appropriate time has passed, eaten. This is my much more common method of offering food. 

Shelf Stable Offerings: A lot of what I offer is chocolate or something already wrapped up from the store. I'll take the thing I want to offer and place it on my altar or shrine. I'll say a prayer and leave it there until it's been a while (offerings on the ancestral shrine sit for a week while ones on the Theoi shrines sit for 3 days to more than a week). After an appropriate amount of time has passed, I'll say thanks again, take the offering, and eat it. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that this is now something that's been affected by a certain amount of energy from that deity. I usually eat something from that altar when I want to evoke an aspect of that deity. For example, maybe I'll eat something from Athena's altar when I know I'm going to go for a particularly difficult run or right when I get back to thank her for helping me to stick it out. 

When I eat the offerings, too, I keep a focus on what I'm doing. I don't use my phone or watch TV or anything. Those offerings are being eaten because I want a connection with the Theoi I offered them to.

Fresh Offerings: For fresh offerings, you can do the same as above, but you'll likely want to eat them sooner. Something like an apple will keep for a while, but fresh salsa won't. You can also offer things in small, sealed container. It's not my preference because I feel that it makes a small barrier for getting to the food, but we have mice outside, so everything for the ancestors has to fit in our tupperware container out there.

Third Way: Offered then Disposed Of

Finally, some people like to dispose of their offerings. This is especially true for liquid offerings. I leave a partial glass of wine out for Dionysos on his shrine, but I'm not going to drink it when it's been there for 4-5 days. I take the wine outside to my balcony, say a prayer of thanks, and pour it respectfully off the edge (there's nobody below, so don't worry). Some people use their sink drain while others go outdoors and pour into the earth. They're all acceptable options!
