Saturday @ OFFF 2011 Barcelona

For some reason I didn't make any notes on the Saturday at OFFF Barcelona, so this post is done from the powers of my bad recall so will probably be a bit shorter than the other two... 

Another overcast morning and I arrived somewhat later due to Friday night in Barcelona.  The first talk I attend is from Nick Campbell he suggests that the only reason that people go to these type of events is to have their own ideas reinforced - in other words - you are not the only ones doing this.  His ideas.  Average is death, there is too much competition.  90%!  If your work life is 9/10 then this is the worst situation, if things are 1/10 then you know you have to change, but being that 10% off is enough to keep you doing things you don't like or are not comfortable doing, find the thing that makes you not want to eat, drink or sleep and become level 10 at that.  Be generous teaching people.  Join the community, if there is no community start one. 

After lunch eboy gave a brief overview of their work and workings.  They seem to be re-creating the whole world little by little in there own 8-bit isometric style.  Another group of people who advocate just getting on with things.

I really enjoyed the talk from Geoff McFetridge but can't remember a great deal of what he said, I am hoping that these talks will all be uploaded to the interweb so I can watch them again.

I finish the festival off by watching Press Play Pause the documentary which explores whether or not the fact that we are all creators now is producing a new revolution or creativity or a sea of mediocrity.  Personally I find record label executives moaning that we are about to enter a cultural dark age because we no longer have their expert hands to filter what is good and bad frankly laughable.  One thing that did make me laugh was when one of the interviewees in the film (I forget who) talking about people's lack of attention a whole group of people up and left the cinema.

Not being a graphic designer not everything was of interest to me but I did find the whole festival quite inspiring and gave me a lift to get on and finish some of my own projects.  All good stuff and wholeheartedly recommended.

Friday @ OFFF 2011

You don't expect mud at a festival in the centre of Barcelona but this morning it was like a wet Sunday in Manchester so it was a soggy crowd that arrived to see up and coming artists and designers from Russia showcased, a wide and varied talent coming from that part of the world. Todo are a design agency that have built everything from festival lighting installations for the Prodigy to interactive displays for exhibitions in different types of venues.  One of their projects allows people to generate  bespoke wallpaper using samples of email spam and at this year's OFFF they were launching Tweetghetto a wall of words built from Twitter feeds and searches.  Cool stuff even if the end of the talk did feel a little like a QVC sales pitch. After lunch (no siesta) a very nervous sounding Eike Koenig founder of HORT came on stage to talk about his long career in record cover design and the trials and tribulations of working with recording artists particularly Booka Shade.  He didn't seem that optimistic about the design world and his advice was that if somebody tells you that they are right then they are wrong, there is only right for you - sound advice I say.  He then talked about a project where his agency had built a band, I'm not sure whether it was real or not and was all a little odd to me. I tried to get in to see David McCandless' talk on infographics but the queue was far too big and ended up watching it on a small TV.  A good, entertaining talk on how data can be manipulated to say one thing by being shown in one way and to say another thing if presented differently.  Big laughs all round when showing european drug use tables, tut tut Spain.  His point was that we should not take figures at face value and investigate more closely when presented with "facts". I didn't feel much like standing at the back of the main hall to listen to Jon Burgerman's long rambling and very funny talk so took advantage of the outside area and grabbed a few beers.  Mr Burgerman seems to be rather enjoying himself doodling on walls and being generally rather silly.  My favourite quote of the weekend "Work is work, lounging in the sun eating ice cream sandwiches looking at attractive young people is probably more interesting".  Change things up he offers, keeps stuff interesting. Another person enjoying himself building on his own hobbies and interests is Andy Cruz of House Industries.  A nice talk through the history of his company which I greatly enjoyed.

And that was a day for me.
