The album ‘It’s Still M.E’ (2020) by Kara Jane Spencer is one of, if not the, most high profile albums I’ve been fortunate enough to work on. I composed/arranged the brass lines for ‘Crushed’ and myself, M and C recorded them.

I first became aware of this project when I spotted a post on Facebook. This was slightly different than most other ‘musicians wanted’ ads that I’d seen on social media... This project had a cause and had already made national media:

I sent an email to the attached email address and waited to hear back - although I wasn’t expecting anything, especially as over 100 other musicians had offered their help. 

Not long after I sent my email, Liam, Kara’s producer, emailed me back letting me know that they would indeed like me (and the rest of the horn section) to play and would I write the charts for the song? 

So, in a similar vein to the rest of the sessions I’ve done, I listened to the track, followed the chord chart, had a look at the lyrics and decided what I thought would work best. For me, in this case, it was to blend in and add to the timbre rather than being a stand out feature... M, C and I recorded our parts and I sent them to Liam then waited to hear the finished article. In the lead up to the launch it was great to see lots of media coverage - local newspapers, BBC TV, BBC Radio.

The album was released on the 8th August and over the next few days it was reported on Birmingham Live, in The Sun and in The Daily Express that the album had gone to number 2 in the Amazon bestsellers list beating Taylor Swift.

Not only did it get to #2 on the Amazon bestsellers chart but the album reached:

After missing a week, we are back.

Head & Heart stays on top (utter dominance) with Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion moving up to 2nd as Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo’s Savage Love falls 8 places down to 10th.

Nathan Dawe & KSI’s Lighter stays in 3rd for the 3rd week and Drake’s Laugh Now Cry Later with Lil Durk moves up to 4th as a new entry. Harry Styles’s Watermelon Sugar stays in 5th (28 weeks in the charts).

Pop Smoke and Lil Tjay’s Mood Swings moves up to 6th from 8th place, AJ Tracey and Mabel’s West Ten moves one place down to 7th, DJ Khaled and Drake’s GREECE moves up a place to 8th, Secrets by Regard & Rave moves down 2 places to 9th and Go Crazy by Chris Brown and Young Thug falls to 11th from 10th.

Joel Corry and MNEK’s Head & Heart kept it’s #1 spot, Nathan Dawe and KSI’s Lighter reached their highest position and Billie Eilish got her seventh UK top ten by scoring her highest record entry with My Future.

Head & Heart kept it’s position for 2 weeks in a row as Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo’s Savage Love also stayed up at 2nd. DJ Nathan Dawe and KSI’s summer banger Lighter moved 1 place up getting both the artists their first Top 3′s. Watermelon Sugar moved up 3 places from 7 despite being released a year ago.

AJ Tracey and Mabel’s West Ten climbed 4 places up to 5th with Secrets by Regard & Rave coming in from 11th. Billie Eilish claimed the highest new entry of the week with My Future at Number 7 and Headie One and Drake’s Only You Freestyle dropped 3 places down to 8th. DJ Khaled and Drake’s GREECE went 3 places up to enter the Top 10 while Go Crazy by Chris Brown & Young Thug went 3 places up to round off the Top 10.
