❝thank you for coming, neji. you being here is going to make the night a lot more bearable than me being here alone.❞
the stem of the champagne glass was pinched between her forefinger and thumb, bringing the glass to her lips for a quick sip. the bubbly liquid slipped down without a hitch, it was smooth, only the best for an elaborate party such as this one, she supposed. the hyuga family always threw the most high end gala’s. they had a reputation to uphold after all.
normally neither she nor neji would attend these events unless they absolutely had to, to save face. but it was for hinata’s birthday and the yamanaka heiress promised that she would be in attendance. she’d even coaxed neji into coming along with her, surprisingly. getting him to come to a social event like this, was like pulling teeth. he was very stubborn and very set in his ways about what he would and would not do.
she moved the skirt of her michael costello dress when a member of the wait staff passed by. he’d nearly stepped on the expensive fabric and it would have been a pain in the ass to get the smudge out of the material. not that she herself would be doing it. she’d take it to the cleaners to get cleaned. but she’d feel bad for the person that had to deal with the stain and would be expected to make a miracle happen. of course, if it didn’t, ino would have understood. she wasn’t as stuck up as people tried to make her seem on a daily basis.
she really wanted this event to be over soon so that she could go home and get out of this dress. this was one of the days where she would have preferred to be sitting in her window seat, dressed down in a pair of sleep shorts, a tank top and her socks with a good book in hand. not smiling pleasantly at people and making small talk with those she wished not to associate with.
❝please tell me that this party is going to be over soon. your uncle seems to be drawing the celebration out longer than necessary. and both hinata and hanabi look just as unamused as we are.❞

she feels his hand on the small of her back before she sees him. he’s guiding her away before she even registers that her feet are actually moving. she feels numb, the tears falling freely from her eyes as they leave the scene. she’d gotten the call while she was out with neji, both actually enjoying the homecoming celebration her school had put on for them this year. neji had already graduated the year before but had agreed to go with her since she hadn’t been able to coax shikamaru into being her date for the evening.
they’d been in the middle of the dance floor, smiles on their faces as they moved to the beat and ino tried to convince him that he needed a girlfriend when she felt her phone buzzing in the pocket of her dress. she honestly wished she would have waited to answer that text message from her mother just a little longer. the wind by mariah carey had been playing overhead when she read the words that had torn her world apart.
the phone clinked to the floor in front of them and neji gathered the device, reading over the text message as her tears began to fall. they’d been falling ever since. even now, as she sat in the front seat of his car, the salty liquid continued to drip from her chin. he’s saying something as he climbs into the driver’s seat and the car is started. he’s probably promising to take her home where she can rest. she realizes her assumption was right when he pulls to a stop in her driveway and gets out to help her into the house.
she doesn’t get past the living room before she collapses to the floor, tears renewed full force. the reality that her father was gone hit her like a ton of bricks. she’d seen her mother at the scene, she’d been the one that alerted her of what happened, and she looked every bit as broken as ino was. she asks neji not to leave, she needs someone to stay with her. at least until her mother gets home. and he promises that he’d stay as long as she needed him to as he helps her to the couch.
she’s hugging the pillow tightly as his hand rubs a soothing circle on her back. he doesn’t tell her that she’ll be okay. because he knows, knows better than anyone how much it hurts to lose a parent. he’s lost both of his, after all, and never fully recovered. instead, he assures her that he’ll be there for her whenever she needs to talk. being someone that has already gone through this, she’s sure he’s the most suitable to give her advice on how to cope with the pain in her heart left from her father’s passing. and she can’t be any more grateful to have such an amazing friend as he at the moment.
❝Not that I’m complaining or anything, but don’t you think it would be better if you maybe wore.. I don’t know, something else? Your fan girls are going to be all over you as soon as they see you.❞ There’s a wink of her eye as she glances over at the other half of the sane members from Team Gai. While she could appreciate the choice of clothing, she knew how much he hated the drawn attention from the girls that chased him throughout the village. ❝I’d change if I were you before you walk out that door.❞

“neji!” don’t try to pretend you don’t hear him neji, he’s already trotting toward you from down the way, “where are you headed to this fine morning, my rival? would you like to join me in the remainder of my morning work-out?”
