     the duffel bag was heavy on his shoulder, reminding him how long it’d been since he’d been in votive. his work kept him busy, and finally a break struck. it was the perfect time to creep back into the biggest attraction in the city. still, he was hesitant. a lot was changing in his life, and he wondered not for the first time if he should start making some changes. for whatever reason, he decided he needed to come back. if only for the last time. 

     instead of checking into a temporary room, he left his bag in the lobby and headed for the bar. he needed to be distracted, and nothing quite like the pulse of bodies, the beat of the music, and the smell of hormones in the main part of the resort could draw his thoughts away from the shadows. sliding an ashtray towards him, he focused on lighting a smoke before ordering a drink. johnny closed his eyes for a long moment, dragging in the smoke and letting it sit awhile in his chest before exhaling it thickly and off to the side. 

      “one beer and jack chaser.”

years. that was how long lottie and jamie already had already known each other. however, nothing other than friendship had happened between the two. well, that was until now. lottie had been the one to tell jamie about the votive in the first place and she was the one who had introduced him to this world. while at first it had been a lot to get used to, this place was attractive to him for a multitude of different reasons, lottie having turned out to be one of them. he wasn’t sure how he had ended up waking up next to her in his suite, but he definitely wasn’t going to complain. “good morning, beautiful,” he said with a small grin as he slowly rolled over to face her, his arm moving around her and his fingertips gently running along the smooth skin of her back. “did you sleep well?”
