the phone call from his mom was frantic. we haven’t seen him since yesterday. we don’t know where he is. and it sent theo spiraling. when he had seen miles standing in cj’s front yard that night, he hadn’t thought anything of it, and when he asked cj about it, she didn’t say much. but hearing the panic and worry in his mother’s voice was enough to entice the same feelings in theo. after hanging up with mama hollis, he started calling anyone he could think of that might know where miles was, what he was doing, but no one knew anything. they hadn’t seen him in a few days or they hadn’t talked to him since the day before. soon enough, fear set in. fear that miles had relapsed, was lying somewhere unconscious with no one to help him.
after spending the afternoon searching all through town and double checking with everyone who may know where his brother was, theo went back to cj’s house, defeated. and that’s when he learned the truth -- miles had gone back to boston. as soon as the words left cj’s lips, theo was grabbing his car keys. he texted his mom for the address of where miles had been staying in boston and put it into the gps, ready to make the near two hour drive. he just had to make sure his brother was okay, that he wasn’t doing anything stupid. theo would never forgive himself if something happened because he knew that it would have been his fault, no one else’s.
by the time theo finally reached the city, it was almost midnight. he hesitated in the car, staring up at the apartment building he prayed to god that his brother was in, perfectly fine, for what seemed like hours before finally mustering up the courage to get out. he buzzed up to miles’ apartment, hoping that his brother was still awake. “ miles, you better open this fucking door, “ he mumbled to himself as he waited for the door to click open.
