“You’ve got that look—like you’re either about to confess something or start a fight.” ( from @ofsecondskin )
John was a lot of things, he made a lot of mistakes, he had a lot of issues, but one thing he wasn't was a bigot, and he knew deep in his heart that that was an outlier among many men like him. From the south, military, chips on their soldiers. It was a breeding ground for bigotry and prejudice, even in their most unintentional forms. It's why he is always floored when someone so wantonly would outright say something horrific within earshot.
Paige was a nice girl, someone he'd happily protect and fight alongside in the heat of battle, and more importantly she was a mutant. Hatred for mutants wasn't an uncommon thread in their world, and with the growing violent acts spreading throughout the country against their kind he couldn't deny genuinely flinching when the man pushed up against him and slurred out his hateful speech about muties probably unknowing about the blonde beside him.
John's fists had clenched and he had to take a deep breath, fighting back every instinct in his brain to not wail on the man or scream at him, cause a scene. Not only would it do more harm than good for Paige or any other mutant in the building, but it'd damage his already blemished record.
"I want to break that bastard's nose." He admits darkly, slowly turning to her and softening his gaze in an attempt to reassure he he wasn't about to start a bar fight. "You alright? That wasn't the kindest thing he said. I can't imagine it felt really good hearing those words." Keeping his voice low, he offers what little respect he could as a human, as a man.
He'd never out someone against their will, regardless if it was about their genes or their sexuality. He was an asshole he wasn't cruel.
