Nalini sighs in frustration, her displeasure evident in her features.
Knock Five Times is empty, as it often is this early in the afternoon, making it the perfect time for the performers who work there to take over. Nalini and Ivy count themselves as two of their number - and whilst Ivy’s Double Bass sounds as tuneful as ever, the same cannot be said of Nalini’s voice.
“Sorry, Ivy,” she turns to them, genuinely apologetic. The last note she had sang hadn’t been quite as pleasant on the ear, breaking halfway through. “I don’t know why I can’t get it right. It’s not like I can’t get up that high.” She sings a few notes to demonstrate, each reaching the desired pitch. “But when you put it in the song, ,I just can’t quite manage it. You think you can help me rearrange it a little?”
She takes a seat on the stage, legs crossing, leaning her elbow on her knee and using her hand to prop up her head. “Or we could take a break for a few minutes and sneak a quick drink? Nobody’s even here right now,” she jerks her head to the empty bar. “And if Hasim catches us, I’ll take the blame.”
