Journal With Witch Episode 8 Review - Break Down

This was quite an emotionally intense episode. It sort of make you appreciate the sacrifices a parent makes for their child, but also seeing them as humans and not protectors. Asa clearly wanted someone to prioritize her above all else and she can’t get that anymore because her parents are no longer present. Makio has made it clear that she’s not Asa’s parent and that she has her own priorities, but she still tries her best to care about her.

People might get mad at Asa’s behavior throughout this episode, but I feel like it’s a good interpretation of a realistic teenager. Teenagers are snarky and can be selfish. I feel like Asa is someone I could see in real life. However, not all kids have experienced what Asa is going through, so the fact that she broke down after realizing her parents are finally gone was really emotional. While Makio only lost her father, she didn’t grief like Asa did, so she did wonder if she was cold-hearted. I honestly was worried that Asa’s mug would be shattered, but it didn’t. It is one of the last things she has to remind herself of her parents.

Was I the only person chuckling when the adults found Asa drinking boba and did the same? I found that the funniest scene in the episode. Instead of scolding her, they just huddled around her and talked about boba to themselves as if she didn’t exist in their periphery. Though, I do wonder why Touno was invited to look for Asa since it did seem as if Makio’s relationship with him is mostly for legal matters. Maybe the anime skipped some scenes in the manga where he showed up?

One thing I found interesting was that Asa’s homeroom teacher didn’t call Makio immediately, but first went to Emiri about Asa before contacting her. Some teachers don’t really care about who their students hang out with, so I found it interesting that she’d primarily go to Emiri who isn’t in Asa’s class but is aware that both are long-time friends. The homeroom teacher is quite an observant person.

Anyways, I do wonder where Asa and Makio will go from here. Will their relationship get better? Will Asa make a step forward to move on now? I wonder what’s going to happen going forth. Let me know your thoughts on this episode!
