Title: Ornamental Figure in the Form of a Kirin Artist: Ogawa Haritsu Medium: Earthenware with lacquer, gold, and mother of pearl Origin: Japan Date: 18th-19th century (Edo or Meiji era) Source: Freer/Sackler Gallery
Wood document box, 1725-1750 (18th c), Japan, by artist Ogawa Haritsu. "Wood, covered in woven bamboo and decorated in lacquer, enamelled pottery and horn. To mimic the various forms, patternation and colouration of fish and shell fish each species is made of varying materials such as horn, coral or pottery. The red woven patternation of the background is striking and draws the eye to the dramatic hues of the shells. Its woven appearance is also suggestive of a fishing basket."
