Japanese food has always been a favorite among Filipinos, but its high prices in restaurants are usually what keeps us from indulging in Japanese cuisine on a daily basis. Fortunately, there is a new restaurant in Quezon City that has just opened, serving affordable and authentic Japanese dishes in a casual and friendly environment. Singer, songwriter, comedian, and television personality Ogie Alcasid and his merry band of characters proudly welcome you to the opening of the newest Japanese fast food restaurant in the city - Hungry Samurai.
Hungry Samurai is a modern Japanese restaurant that offers fast Japanese cuisine without compromising on its quality. It had its soft opening in April 11, 2018 along the busy Tomas Morato Avenue then made a “slashing” Grand Opening last September 5, 2018 which was attended by several bloggers, cosplayers, and the owners of the new restaurant, including Mr. Ogie Alcasid. Diners are sure to have a memorable dining experience each time they visit Hungry Samurai because not only will they get to feast on delicious and affordable items, they might even spot a few celebrities hanging out on its premises.
The cozy space inside Hungry Samurai is just enough to fit around 30-40 diners, with playful and catchy interiors showing the iconic landmarks and pop culture references from the Land of the Rising Sun. This was formerly Ryu Ramen & Curry restaurant and is being operated by the same management team so their expertise in Japanese cuisine is very evident.
Hungry Samurai is a great place to meet up with family and friends because you will not have to spend too much to enjoy authentic Japanese food. It’s location along Tomas Morato makes it a fantastic spot to have dinner after a long day at work. The grand opening celebration also took it one notch higher as these cosplayers joined the party with their amazing costume designs.
Hungry Samurai comes with a fast casual dining experience. This means that customers can place and pay for their order at the counter and these will be served at their tables once it is ready.
The menu is pretty straightforward, with many of our favorite Japanese dishes being offered at just between P98-P198 each. The prices are really quite affordable, but the quality of the items are definitely much better than the usual Japanese fast food restaurants.
Start with some of their sushi and sashimi selections which are all priced at just P198 each. These include the Salmon Sashimi and the Tuna Sashimi which are all served fresh and delicious.
The popular California Maki is also available as well as the more interesting Ebi Crunch Roll and the Spicy Salmon Surprise. I highly recommend the Ebi Crunch Roll with its shrimp tempura wrapped inside a soft maki then doused with a sweet sauce. This is a good choice for tempura lovers like me.
Other familiar appetizers on the menu are the Edamame (P98) and the Pork Gyoza (P98). The edamame has a sweet buttery taste while the gyoza comes with that savory bite.
If you are a fan of Ryu Ramen before, you will be delighted to know that they have carried their ramen selection over at Hungry Samurai. The Chasyu Ramen (P198) has a rich and tasty broth topped with thick slices of pork chasyu.
The Tantanmen (P198) is a better choice for those who prefer their ramen spicy. It comes with ground pork and a spicy broth for a flavorful combination.
They also have several Donburi or rice toppings to choose from like the Hamburger Curry (P198) and the Gyudon (P198) with its thin slices of smoky beef. Other rice bowls available are the Ebidon, Toridon, and the popular Katsudon, all priced at just P198 each.
But the signature item at Hungry Samurai is their Hungry Samurai Meal (P198). This is an entire meal fit for a samurai and served in one gigantic plate. It comes with a choice of one main course which includes chicken, pork, beef, or seafood dishes plus unlimited cabbage, unlimited miso soup, a choice of yakisoba and chahan, and a glass of iced tea. Now that is enough to satisfy any hungry samurai.
It’s very easy to create your own customized Hungry Samurai Meal. First, choose among the different main courses available like Chicken Teppan, Pork Ribs, Beef Misono, Tuna Teppan, and many more. Do note that there is an additional P40 fee for beef and seafood choices. Second, choose from among the Yakisoba selections which include chicken teriyaki, miso itame, beef, or seafood yakisoba. Lastly, pick which type of Chahan or fried rice you like from seafood, chasyu, beef, or chicken chahan.
There are so many different combinations you can create so everyone on the table can have their own customized plate. I do like seafood so the Ebi Furai would be my choice for the main course. The crunchy prawns were really good! Imagine this big plate with chahan, yakisoba, plus unlimited cabbage and miso soup is only P198! Now that is great value for money.
Diners can also ask for additional side orders of chicken, pork, yakisoba or chahan for only P48 each. The Honey Orange Karaage is one of their best-sellers so make sure to try this main course as well.
Additional beef or seafood dishes will cost a little bit more at P88 each but they are also worth it, like this crunchy Ika Furai or fried squid.
For guests on the go, you can also have your Hungry Samurai Meals for take out and these will be served in these handy bento boxes.
Here’s a special Grand Opening Treat for everyone! Starting September 6, you can get this combination of a Hungry Samurai Meal and a bowl of Ramen with two glasses of iced tea from 11:00am to 5:00pm daily for only P298. That is an amazing promotion! Watch out for their other branches in the metro soon with their next outlet at the NAIA Terminal 3. Make sure to bring your appetite and your friends over so you can all enjoy these Japanese treats at Hungry Samurai.
