I went to an art show this week and im so pissed off about it, so raving under the cut v
there was so much wrong and poorly-planned and set up and just disappointing in general about this show i would never shut up so I will talk about 1 (one) thing that pisses me off the most.
This Fucking Guy. He was a laser engraver. for wood specifically. I peeped this immediately and just assumed that he was reselling amazon shit and then slapping generic live laugh love bullshit from online on it bc it was all bald eagles and couch pillow sayings in White Woman Fonts you see everywhere and a turntable i've seen at walmart. Right?
Then My Wood Working Family Member who i was with picked up a bowl and I think "Oh? He actually made something? Maybe he built the wood then and got the moving parts online and then had bad taste for the laser engraving. Unfortunate, but I suppose the wood's the most important part-"
Only for MWWFM (My Wood Working Family Member) to go "I recognize this! This is my friend's work!" and we collectively turn to look at This Guy, who is, decidedly, not MWWFM's close personal friend.
This Guy, not sensing the danger he is in, immediately gets excited and starts rambling about The Friend. Apparently This Guy is selling the pieces for The Friend - consignment style + added lazy laser printing on top. Well okay then, so long as The Friend is cool with it even though there's no signage anywhere labeling the real work as not the booth owner's and in fact another artist's.
MWWFM is pissed about this, understandably so. If he didn't personally know the real artist he would have gone on assuming the only real art at this table belonged to This Guy.
But then This Guy let something else slip. The consignment part is new. Apparently, before, he would just buy The Friend's art, laser print it with Bullshit stolen from elsewhere, and then resell it at art fairs.
I'm so pissed off it's not even funny. I'm going to blow something up. The only bright side is me and MWWFM being bitchy together about this absolutely Grub of a man bumming off the work of real artists.
I think about the buyer that MWWFM was excited about recently who bought half a dozen salad bowls.
