A conversation with @curator-on-ao3 reminded me of this little (6 year old and so far unfinished) fic:
“Captain, before we meet with the others, you should be aware of something.“
“Hm?” Janeway replied distractedly, her mind still reeling with all the information, Seven had provided and already trying to plan their further actions.
“Your alter ego is in a relationship with Lieutenant Torres or rather with Brigitte,” Seven said.
“Of course people who belong to a small underground group have a somewhat closer relationship.” Janeway ignored the skip of her heart at the mere idea of her alter ego having anything else but a platonic relationship with B’Elanna. “They have to stick together.”
“Despite the fact that Tuvok is your second in command, you do not hold hands with him,” Seven said. “I so far haven’t seen you kiss him either.”
Janeway froze – at least her body did. The images in her head didn’t. Suddenly there were pictures of something Janeway had kept downtrodden flooded her mind; pictures of B’Elanna and herself holding hands, the two of them touching and kissing.
A shiver ran down Janeway’s spine and goose-bumps erupted all over her body.
Slowly, Janeway looked at Seven who was studying her curiously.
“Am I assuming correctly that it would be inappropriate to point out that your face is flushing and your pulse quickened?”
“Very much so, yes,” Janeway replied and moved ahead again.
“Then I further assume it would also be inappropriate to ask for the correlation between me mentioning Lieutenant Torres and your reaction.”
Janeway shot Seven a glare.
The crested implant above Seven’s eye twitched. “Since I’m not yet accustomed to human behaviour and find it illogical to not discuss these things, I will inform you that Lieutenant Torres displays the same symptoms whenever she sees you.”
Janeway stopped. “What will make you drop this subject?”
“An explanation as to why you don’t pursue your mutual interest.”
Janeway choked out a laugh. This can’t be happening, she thought. Of all the people… “Seven…” Janeway broke off, then tried again: “Besides many other reasons why it’s not possible… one doesn’t just barge into an existing relationship.”
“Then you would be advised to use a more diplomatic approach,” Seven said.
Janeway sighed. “B’Elanna and Tom have a loving relationship. I wouldn’t want to end that.”
“Why would you need to end their relationship?”
At this point, Janeway could just stare at Seven. How was she supposed to explain the complexity of relationships to the former Borg drone in mere minutes? Then she realized she couldn’t. “I’m happy to discuss that at another time.”
Seven looked at Janeway for a moment and then – as if coming to a conclusion – started moving again.
Janeway sighed with relief and began to rigorously pushing thoughts of B’Elanna away as she followed. She could get back to that particular subject later as well – more or less happily.
