her ugly dead monster
The monstrosity reached out into the fear and the clatter, blindly groping for the feel of his ugly companion. His hands made contact with the arch of her back and he pushed her down, hard to the linoleum floor beneath her feet. She connected with the ground hard, letting a gasp of pain escape her lips. “Stay down,” he hissed at her, crouching down so that his face was level with hers for a moment. She had no time to argue. Her uncertainty gave way to her fear and she was powerless. It latched on to her then, crushing her heart with an iron grip and refused to let her go. She couldn’t breathe. She was scared, more scared than she had ever been in her life; more afraid then she thought humanly possible. She reached up, trying to reach for her monster’s hand, but groped air and knew it was too late. He was too far away; too far out of her grasp. She could see the danger approaching him, slinking towards him through the waves of panic and fear and blood. And she could not reach him. Later on, when she was alone, in the dead of night, her eyes glued to the ceiling of her bedroom, it would be that fact that haunted her.
