Curse of the Clans part 21! @selfindulgenz @scentedcandlecryptid @rottmnt-addict
With his latest failure, Raphael was back to the drawing board. His mind still buzzed with the sight he had seen in the council’s chambers, his thoughts at war with the need to find a new king to get a blessing from. He had even gotten desperate enough to do an online search for king yokai; it didn't take him long to realize why he wasn’t the tech savvy one, and it took him even less time to miss Donatello. His brother would have been able to find a billion kings by now, no doubt! And Raphael hadn’t even found one!
Asking around the Hidden City provided even less results. The few yokai that stopped to listen to his questions either had no idea how to help him, or they sent him on wild goose chases pursuing leads that led nowhere. Finally, when the frustration and constant disappointment became too much, Raphael screamed at the top of his lungs in the middle of the streets.
“HOW HARD IS IT TO FIND A KING?!”
The answer to all his problems slapped him in the face. Raphael gave a loud growl, swiping at the wet newspaper several times before he was able to peel it off of his face. He went to toss the offending paper, but then the headline caught his attention. He was just barely able to cling to the article as it tried to fly away.
Raphael read the headline out loud to himself, his hands tracing along the dark ink. “King Komodo strikes again…?”
The paper flew out of Raphael’s hand with the next gust of powerful wind. The next few hours were spent with Raphael once more referring himself to the people of the Hidden City for his aid.
“Excuse me?” He called out to a passing bear, who slowed to listen, “Do you know anything about King Komodo?”
“King Komodo?” The bear rumbled, “Baddest yokai there is! But you shouldn’t be talking about ‘em!”
Raphael tilted his head. “Why not?”
The bear simply made a vague gesture as he walked away a lot quicker than he had approached. Raphael stared after him a moment, considering the words of the bear yokai before he hurried to catch up to the next yokai that caught his eye.
“Excuse me?” Raphael called out, but the yokai kept walking. “Can you tell me anything about King Komodo?”
Raphael’s question was answered by a different passing yokai to the one he had initially addressed. “King Komodo? Didn't he eat a couple human kids a few years back?”
“Wha… eat?” This time, Raphael stopped and watched in a slight growing horror as the yokai disappeared into the crowd. He was in shocked silence for a moment before he found someone else, “D… do you know anything about—?”
“Sorry, can’t help ya kid.”
“Hey, can you tell me about—?”
“Sorry, I’m late for work!”
“Do you mind if I ask— oh, okay, guess you’re busy.”
The hours passed without Raphael getting much more information. When he did manage to ask the entire question, all the yokai he had asked tried to separate themselves from him as quickly as possible. A few of them made passing comments that Raphael shouldn’t be talking of such things, warning him to stop, but he didn't. This was a lead and he had to follow it, no matter what the well-meaning yokai said!
When Raphael ran out of ways to ask the same question, he sat defeated and downtrodden on a bench and rested his face in his hands. The second day was already drawing to a close, and he was still no closer to finding out where he could get a mystic blessing! He hoped his brothers were at least doing better than he was…
Raphael looked up from his hands— and then up and up and up some more until his eyes met the cold, black stare of a water buffalo gazing down at him. His shadow completely swallowed Raphael, but Raphael felt very little fear looking up at the big yokai.
“Yeah? How can I help ya?”
The buffalo tilted his head ever so slightly. “You da one been askin’ ‘bout King Komodo?”
“Yes.” Raphael said innocently, almost excited. He climbed quickly to his feet, hardly coming up to the buffalo’s chest in height, and gave a hopeful smile. “Do you know him?”
The buffalo snorted. Hot breath blasted Raphael in the face and made him scrunch up his beak and pull away, waving his hang trying to dismiss the heat.
“Hey, no offense buddy, but could you maybe breath somewhere else?”
The buffalo didn't seem to care about Raphael’s request. He pulled back his lips and flashed flat, almost shiny teeth before his rough, four-fingered hands came down upon Raphael’s shoulder and gripped him firmly. Raphael winced at the sharp pinch of his muscles but, before he could even make an attempt to reach for his tonfa to free himself, the buffalo’s hands went from Raphael’s shoulders to grip instead at his jaw. The yokai slammed his head hard against Raphael’s and, after a moment of torment seared through his cranium, Raphael lost consciousness.
"The king sends his regards."
