Hmm, idk just how unpopular/questionable this opinion is, but I think that part of the reason why Ralph was so disgusted with Sandy is because in him he saw the "perversion" of his own suicidal ideation after Dunkirk, the twisting of something he lowkey saw as honorable into cheap blackmail.
Hmmm, you’re putting things into a new perspective here. I always thought that the main reason why Ralph disliked Sandy so much was because of the way he expressed his "homosexuality", ie reinforcing the stereotypes surrounding gay men and associating with a very select group of individuals (other gay men). Something Mary Renault was really against, which can obviously be seen in her writing and influenced Laurie and Ralph's characterization. But there were obviously more factors fueling Ralph’s hatred, so you’re probably right.
