Happy birthday!!! Hope you're feeling better!! How did you like you've got mail??

aw, thank you my friend!! this is a belated reply (my birthday was on the 7th and you wrote to me then) but i finished You've Got Mail last night and . . . I'm torn! First, I'm grateful that I watched it. It's good romance movie homework because my goal this summer is just to familiarize myself more with the genre -- if I find a few movies I'd like to teach, that's frosting.

You've Got Mail is interesting because I knew from the jump that the film doesn't really follow through with the class issues inherent to the premise -- I don't know how much that compares the The Shop Around the Corner, which inspired it, but I do know that the modern romcom and the screwball comedy of old hollywood are interesting points of comparison insofar as class really is central to the latter in a way that is conspicuously absent in most romances now. so anyways, yeah, really bonkers that the film does nothing with Joe Fox's pretty ample trespasses against Kathleen or the closing of her mother's shop. there's also the fact that that her boyfriend is this kind of overbearing socialist/commie in comparison to Jeff Bezos Tom Hanks. BUT . . . the premise of falling in love with someone via email, and the tension between who your beloved believes you to be via text/email versus who you are in real life, and the chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks . . . the last line of the film ("I wanted it to be you. I wanted it be you so badly"). Compelling!! I cried! There can be such gems in imperfect movies and sometimes that's so much chewier than what you get in a perfect film.

i'm nearly caught up on the vampire lestat and i was telling my darling friend i was watching it with that it's really compelling to think that, in the anne rice universe, non-humanity bars you from making good art. like, louis is a middling photographer. lestat is constantly getting shit for his music. the theatres des vampires appeals to very few people and its camp to the point of being vaudeville. they're immortal beings but none of them make art that can stand the test of time. it's interesting to think that lestat's greatest tether to humanity is his appreciation and fascination with art and while he certainly knows quite a lot about music, for instance, he's incapable of making truly transcendental art himself. his professed influences are the great masters yet he's making taylor swift bops and rocky horror picture show b sides. i tried to argue that vampirism in the world of anne rice puts you on the same playing field as an AI art generator but apparently that's going too far (and okay maybe it is. that might be one mortal sin too much to put on lestat's shoulders).
