“I will not say it’s not good to see you, because it really is.” Why, it’s always good to see your old friends, no matter the circumstances. But if Kanashii was there, standing in front of the stairs to his throne, scanning him like a robot, Geliebte knew it wasn’t for the good old laughs they had together in the past. Certainly, it wasn’t to relive any of those memories either. Probably, it had something to do with the last attack he made.
If not, she was just trying to play the hero. Just like he did years ago. A failed hero, one who couldn’t even protect the ones he loved the most, one who couldn’t save his wife from death, one who fought for people who wanted no change. All they wanted was a martyr, all they wanted was a statue to raise. He did every thing he could for them, but forgot to do it for himself as well.
“You’ve changed a lot, Kanashii…” So much about her was different… So much, so much. The years went by pretty quickly — to him, at least. “I suppose you didn’t come to reminisce the old times, or for tea drinking. I want you to stop and think: do you really want to fight against me? Do you really want to fight for those who won’t give a damn if you drop dead on the battlefield? I don’t care if you’re here for your village either. They will not care if you’re just another body in a mass grave.”
“I’ve been here before. I’ve stood where you stand. People called me their hero. But why should we save them when they stand for nothing? If they deserve life, let them stand for themselves. ”
“Oh it surely is.” Such words wouldn’t mean much if they didn’t have an impact brought by the years they were apart. Kanashii struggled, battled with herself and others since her youngest days to prove herself as a hero. Resulting in seven years practically wasted by her blind naivety to kill a giant beast, a lost arm, and the lost chance of reuniting with Geliebte-- maybe even losing the chance to prevent him from becoming what he is right now.
And that’s what probably hurt her the most: he was her friend, and there was nothing she could call him other than “Geli...”, she never learned how to say his full name. Sticking to a nickname was really painful. “You didn’t understand what it means to be a hero, then.” She dared to say, approaching him with her only hand on her sword and grief in her eyes. If there’s one thing that she was taught in those years of self destruction back then, is that death shouldn’t be feared.
If anything, it was only there to show how precious one’s entire life can be... and how despicable some people might become.
“I’m angry, Geli. I lost the place I used to call home because of you, and my grandmother will never be able to return.” Her voice was calm, but the hybrid was just terrorized on the inside. She didn’t even know if that was the same Geli. She pitied him too much to risk trying to save him from this corrupted sea. Recklessness would cost her life.
It almost did once.
“But I’m not here to fight you.” As long as she wanted, she couldn’t. Her steps became fewer and fewer as there were only a few feet tearing them apart. “I want to know what happened during all these years.”
