The single was released December 10th, 1996 after it's album release August 1996.
Recently this past 2 years, Wikipedia is now saying this was single was actually released November 12, 1996 instead.. hmm. I have been sharing 12/10 as the release date for the past 2 decades and not planning on changing that all because someone changed it on wiki and has no source to back it up. I'm still looking into this to confirm where 11/12 came from. Many sources (and fans) still use 12/10 as the official release date.
Until we are corrected by Blackground/Atlantic Records themselves, it's 12/10/96.
For the week ending on January 5th, 1997, Aaliyah’s iconic music video for her single “One in A Million” makes its television debut on MTV.
The day prior (January 4th), the single peaked at number 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts.
The OIAM album was nominated for “Best R&B/Soul Album – Female” at the 1997 Soul Train Music Awards but unfortunately lost to Toni Braxton’s “Secrets” album.
Towards the end of the music video, Sigmund (Siggy) Jackson aka Dealz (Michael Jackson's nephew) is seen driving the motorcycle that Aaliyah is riding on the back of.
