Wind is certainly fun when you're awake. But not so much when you are in the other room and your paranoia makes you wonder if someone IS trying to break in for like 2.5 seconds. :B
You're adorable and awesome, have a nice week. :)
These posts always make life a bit brighter. Thanks! You too.
Have you always had this good a relationship with your mom? Do you believe there's an age window wherein all girls have difficulty tolerating their mothers?
I dunno. I think relationships with parents are relative.
My mother quit work when I was born. This isn’t a commentary on whether mothers should work - it’s just what she did. But because she did, I spent the First Five with her more or less undivided attention. She read to me so much that I picked it up before kindergarten, and when I’d want to talk about what I’d been reading, she’d respond. She encouraged creative work. She introduced me to old movies.
She got a walker for her condition when I was seven, but I don’t think it changed anything. I had to defend her honor to the kids at school, but that was it. We’d bonded over interests that didn’t require a lot of moving around, and I sucked at PE anyway.
But my mother had a brain for math. And I didn’t, in about the worst way you can and still function in the Information Age. The tone had been set from birth that I didn’t deserve respect unless I went to a “major university" - which was not her doing, by the way, but that’s a story of its own - and competition among the ‘92 babies was brutal. She tried to help me study. I’d struggle and throw tantrums. She’d get angry at me for throwing the tantrum, and after that afraid that my trouble with math was going to give me a difficult future, fear being the emotion that perpetuates everything else. And this neglects to mention the food-versus-utilities budget we were on.
So yeah, it got weird for a while. I thought it was my responsibility to make her happy, and I felt like I couldn’t.
Then 2010 happened. 2010 is something I’ve never gone into public detail about, and I don’t see why I would. But the point is that in nine months it became the two of us, homeless, on food stamps, uprooting ourselves four hundred miles because it was that or a shelter. And when you undergo something that cataclysmic minor personality conflicts have a way of not mattering anymore. All you want is to survive. We had to become “junkyard dogs," as she put it, and that meant fighting for each other.
My uneducated opinion is that there’s no “one age window" for everybody. A lot of psych literature exists about the relationship with the same-sex parent versus the opposite-sex parent, but I haven’t read it, and I have a hunch some of it’s still founded in wild-eyed Freudian coke talk. Me, I think it depends on whether you establish mutual trust and respect. Even in the ass end of adolescence my mother and I had a dialogue instead of a dictatorship, and while some people have suggested that she treats me too much like a gal pal, I’m not complaining. We’re alive.
