Now we had the basic bald head cast we went back in with the wax clay to add hair. Our transition silicone mould means we can continue to add many different hair styles or adaptations to our original sculpt. I chose to do a mohawk to make a punk character.

We started our first week off learning how to model life like heads from wax (oil based clay) that I had been wanting to try for some time now. It was really lovely to work with and its firmness means carving into it works well and can be worked quite roughly with out being scared of loosing form and detail that would be a concern with water based clay. After our first 30min crash course we started over, taking more time to refine the final sculpt ready for casting. We made a mould by putting the sculpts in a wooden box and filling with silicone. Once the silicone was cured we prised open the boxes and cut a slit to remove the wax. It was important to cut a zig zag opening to ensure it fits together snugly when casting from the mould later. We then taped the mould back together and mixed a polyurethane resin and poured it into the mould. The first cast came out pretty good for a first attempt with only a few air bubbles and im happy with the result.

I can't believe I didn't post these either! Man. I took a break from social media in August and it threw off my groove. This is the final outcome! This has been my August 😁 so fun building my first helmet! Still working on it but it's coming along great. I had to perform brain surgery and knock back some build up I had done on the armature originally. Now it's the right size and no longer feels bulky!
