Sigurd Ojo de Serpiente: ¿Qué le pudo generar este rasgo?
Sigurd Ragnarsson (Siglo VIII – Siglo IX) nació en la región de Escandinavia, específicamente en Dinamarca. Se decía que tenía el símbolo de los Uróboros en su ojo izquierdo, o un ojo con el iris vertical, motivo por el cual fue apodado “Serpiente en el ojo” u "Ojo de serpiente" (en nórdico antiguo Sigurðr ormr í auga).
Si bien muchas figuras históricas han sido destacadas por rasgos físicos, como su hermano Ivar el Deshuesado, Björn Ironside o Alejandro Magno, para enfatizarles un rasgo divino o monstruoso o remarcar su historia, muchos de estos rasgos pudieron ser realidad y causados por ciertas enfermedades.
En el caso de Sigurd Ragnarsson, ¿qué pudo estar detrás de su conocido ojo?
Existen tres causas, de menor a mayor probabilidad tras ello, a continuación las paso a detallar:
1. Aniridia: Se trata de una condición genética que consiste en la ausencia parcial o total del iris (la parte coloreada que rodea la pupila). Esto produce que el iris, al ser más pequeño, de la sensación de que la pupila es más grande o irregular. Genera problemas de visión al no regularse adecuadamente la entrada de luz al ojo.
2. Heterocromía: Se trata de una condición (heredada o adquirida) en que la persona que la padece presenta un o varios ojo de dos colores (tanto en pequeñas partes como en todo el ojo) o dos ojos de color distinto. En su caso, podría haber presentado una pequeña mancha más oscura en el ojo izquierdo (heterocromía parcial).
3. Coloboma: Se trata de la causa más posible. En estos casos el iris se encuentra fisurado de manera congénita (desde el nacimiento debido a una malformación fetal) en forma de hendidura oscura por parte de la pupila, dándose el mismo aspecto que en el caso anterior, generando una apariencia similar a la de el ojo vertical de una serpiente.

There is a snake with a head on each end on the band and an ouroboros encircling the stone on the bezel. . . . It is a wide band, but it is surprisingly lighter than expected and easy to wear.
