I see you have upped me, sir! I have decided to theme these posts! So have some facts about my medical history!
1, I am diabetic (type 2), when it was discovered my blood sugar was up around the 450-500 range, and my ac1 was like… 12. The doctor was very surprised that I said I felt absolutely fine other than being thirsty and drinking water all day long. It’s pretty stable now, I’m on meds and last it was checked my ac1 was like… 9 or 10. To be honest I don’t think I eat that bad. I could name several family members who have MUCH worse diets than I do but have no such health problems. I blame stress (which I am pretty much in a constant state of- not being stressed makes me stressed), trashy sleep schedules, complete lack of activity and the bad genetics lottery.
2. I have psoriasis (it’s an auto-immune disease, meaning genetic, meaning you can’t catch it, if you have it, it might never manifest but it usually does because of trauma). It appeared on my feet after a foot surgery, so it was like trading one problem for another. If I had a choice, I’d take the old problem back and never complain about pain when standing.
3. I became lactose intolerant as an adult, which sucks. Especially because most diabetic diets revolve around eating things with lactose in it (because cheese/milk products and meat are what I call “slow carbs” that sustain your blood sugar over time, unlike bread, and sugar, and straight up carbs aka “fast carbs” which spike your blood sugar and then tank it). I am beginning to think I might be allergic to milk? Because some of the same symptoms present itself when I eat lactose free milk products. Not a doctor’s visit I’m looking forward to.
4. I broke out in hives when taking a medication after my foot surgery and found out I was allergic to sulfur. Which has trashed my bucket-list item of going to a sulfur onsen. I’m allergic to like, five separate, unrelated things.
5. I developed migraines, about the same time I was diagnosed diabetic. Not fun and it’s never the same trigger, there are about five or six things that set them off, but they’re now thankfully managed with a doctor’s script and management of my health in general.
6. My mom recently watched this show about obese autopsies, and it said that a probable cause for divets in my skin (meaning I press down with my thumb on my leg, like on top of my shin bone and instead of popping right back up, the divet remains in the shape of my thumb) is heart problems. So that’s another reason to see the doctor and start getting in shape again.
Extra: I have come to the conclusion that the same way I like to collect things like scarves, and books, and yarn, and totebags, and socks, my body has decided to collect health problems- because if I can laugh and treat it like it’s already behind me, it feels less like a mountain I have to climb and more like a scenic journey- which feels less like failing every day because I forgot to accomplish something, and more like reminding myself to take a step down the trail while I’m looking around.Extra Extra: Don’t be like me, take care of yourself and don’t hold up punishing your body and pushing yourself to do long hours, overtime, and crunching for deadlines like you’re getting a medal of honor for doing so. You and your body deserve to be treated well.
