this isn’t from anything you rebloged but ‘’kisses gone wrong’’ prompts reminded me of a platonic version where it’s like… one goes in for a hug or a cheek kiss and the other shifts at the exact wrong second and they bump heads, or they just tense up, and it turns into this painfully comically awkward moment. anyway an episode from shoko & maria early days (sober or drunk).
maria makes shoko curious. it’s the first time that someone out of jujutsu society (and even including most of those within it) really wants to see her. not just the concept of her, but sift through the meat of her. she surprises herself when she realizes that she actually does want to spend time with her, to waste time and feel like this isn’t all temporary.
she can tell maria is more tipsy than she is, grasping her forearm when she nearly trips on the threshold leading out of the bar. but, they’re both laughing, engrossed in this moment.
the humid air hits them all at once and it makes shoko want to run back in and see if she can get a beer to go. a cool drink to ease the remnants of warmth that cling, reluctant to give way to autumn. but, she lets @okaymused loop her arm around hers as they take one step at a time down the block.
when they get to maria’s apartment, she insists shoko stay over. that it would be safer. she hovers by the doorframe as she pushes the door open. it’s another world in there, another layer of friendship. it doesn’t have to be. shoko is good about creating distance. but, she wants this— the warmth that clings.
maybe another night though.
“professor is expecting me earlier than usual. i’ll be fine. i’m not as drunk as you are.” shoko smiles, teasing. she prods her forehead with an index finger. there’s something soft that exists, reluctant and tinged in disappointment, but soft.
she sways forward and shoko, for a second, thinks that she’s about to pass out. she wasn’t that drunk, was she? — a heavy step forward, and she rushes to meet her. it’s too late when she realizes it’s meant to be a hug, meeting each other at the wrong angles. one arm under one of maria's while her other slung around shoko's shoulders.
there's awkward laughter and silence in between as both try to figure out what to do with that. then, they both open their mouths at the same time which furthers the awkwardness of it all until shoko scoffs, shaking her head. "you're tipsier than i thought." another joke meant to alleviate it all.
shoko reaches forward, tussles maria's hair like she's her kid sister. except that might have made it worse because they're the same age. they laugh anyways, an outburst that lasts a few more seconds before shoko angles herself towards the way out.
"text me tomorrow." a genuine invitation. friendship in bloom.
