Time seemed to drag until her phone lit up with an incoming call. Maddie. She picked up before the second ring.
“Shannon? Hey, we’re pretty busy here, but why are you asking about Buck? He’s still on medical leave.”
Shannon took a deep breath. “Yeah, I know. Christopher is with him today. He, uh, he sent me a picture earlier. I – um, I, I can’t be sure, he only sent the photo, but I think they might have been at the pier.”
There was a heavy silence, then a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. “I – no, I haven’t heard from him today. When I’m on shift he usually doesn’t text, he’ll wait until I get home.”
“So it’s – it’s normal that he might not be answering his phone?”
“He, um, if someone is calling and he’s not at work he usually picks up.”
It was Shannon’s turn to be left in silence.
“I mean, so many people are calling, the cell towers could just be overwhelmed. You might just be missing each other. How long ago did he send the photo?” Shannon could tell Maddie was trying to reassure both of them.
“About, um, an hour before the wave hit?”
“So, okay, that’s lots of time to get out of the area. I know Buck likes taking Christopher to the zoo – did he mention anything about going there today?”
“I don’t know, Eddie had Chris and dropped him off with Buck this morning, he said he thought Buck needed some cheering up. I didn’t know what their plans were for the day.”
“Okay,“ Maddie murmured, and Shannon could hear her typing on the other end of the line. “I’m not seeing any calls from his number. We’re getting – we’re getting a lot of calls for first aid, but I don’t see any mentioning a boy Christopher’s age either as a caller or a patient. That’s good.”
“Yeah,” Shannon said numbly.
“Shannon, I really need you to not think the worst right now,” Maddie said, slipping into her dispatcher voice. “Like you said, we don’t know what their plans were. There are a few different piers they could have been at, and they weren’t all hit the same. They could have been back at Buck’s place before he texted you. They could be having a nap on his couch for all we know.”
