summary: how they act about it, what they watch, headcanons

content: modern!au ig? since they're watching this stuff haha. based entirely on shows I watch/ed, so english/american shows mentioned here.

includes: gintoki sakata, okita sougo, toshiro hijikata

a/n: hubby and I started sakamoto days a bit ago and I'm obsessed with nagumo now. felt like I def had a better grasp on the jjk men with this subject but it was fun nonetheless.

→ likes to watch some but won't ever truly admit it. would rather maintain his nonchalant front.

→ his preference is baking competition shows. will always make comments about the desserts and how they could be 'better' (and it's just him suggesting horrendous amounts of strawberry icing).

╰› cake wars, the great british baking show: explained above. when a theme or whatever is announced, gin immediately starts brainstorming aloud about what he'd create if he was participating, usually feigning ignorance regarding the restrictions that the judges just explained.

╰› the bachelorette, ex on the beach: guilty pleasure of shitty reality tv. for the first, he likes to critique the women for all but throwing themselves at this man they've just read or heard about. 'what can be so good about just some guy?'. for the second, he enjoys the how absolutely messy it can get. still says simple things like 'obviously they were going to bring his ex, he kept going on about how they couldn't' while still being surprised himself at some things.

→ would watch stretched out on the couch, posture suggesting there was nothing else on and that he settled for this; secretly he blocked off the hour to couch rot with the drama taking place worlds away. would scratch his head/ass or pick his nose to further feign disinterest.

→ would try to play the 'disinterested' bit so hard he actually falls asleep watching a catch-up or rerun marathon every once in a while, having been so invested he just fell asleep mid-episode.

sougo okita ✶⋆.˚

→ watches reality tv just like he watches illegal fights. if it's a good one he almost gets off on the chaos and drama.

→ prefers dating shows/competitions. this one doesn't really need much explanation, the girls fighting and causing drama would get him and his sadistic, psychoanalystic tendencies all riled up.

╰› the bachelorette, are you the one, etc: just thinks the cattiness is funny. he thrives watching women fight over something he deems insignificant - 'look at them, getting all worked up over nothing~'.

╰› (early) real housewives, og jersey shore, etc: shows during the kind of 'peak' reality tv time period are a special gem to okita, for different reasons. with real housewives and the like, he got to watch milfs bicker with each other over nonissues. with og jersey shore and the like, they were still severely lenient on the type of content they let fly, so he loved watching what ensued with close quarters, hard drugs, parties, and televised fist fights.

→ roots at the tv while watching as if it were a sports game. if words start getting heated, okita's cheering for the messiest participant involved, bonus points if hands start getting thrown.

→ if he found out hijikata watched the same shows, okita would tease him in front of everyone, all the time. if hijikata tried to flip it on him, okita would have a 'reasonable' answer as to why he was watching it. if hijikata tried to circle back and say that's why he was watching it too, okita would claim he's only saying that since he (okita) said it first, and that he (hijikata) is just trying to save face.

toshiro hijikata ✶⋆.˚

→ secretly sets aside time in his schedule for self care - face masks, puzzles, and this also includes reality tv.

→ likes cooking competition shows, as well as any sort of handiwork/craftsman competition shows.

╰› chopped, cutthroat kitchen, masterchef: always mumbling under his breath that mayo could've been more involved and that it would've taken the participant's dish to a new level.

╰› those shows where they like. smelt swords: he likes watching handheld weapons be made. gives him a rush of something masculine that makes him feel like he could do that, too. once he's stopped watching it, he no longer thinks that anymore (maybe really deep down tho).

→ if anyone else is nearby, he is absolutely not looking straight at the screen if one of these is on. matter of fact, he'd be the first one to rush to grab the remote and change it if someone asked if he was watching it in order to ask to change it.

→ during the times he's blocked off in his schedule for ~me time~, he's in his pjs with a blanket wrapped around him, sitting in the floor in front of the tv. he'd get attached to participants each season of a show and be upset when that season ended/a new one began. cue him then becoming attached to those participants …..

⚔️ Bokken Lessons

Aoko reflects on how different Okita is compared to everyone else in her day to day life.

“Y’know for all the complaining Kai-niichan does about ya, yer not really all that bad!”

It didn’t really surprise Aoko that Kaito complained about her, but hearing it said so bluntly did hit some sort of nerve. She breathed out slowly, staying calm in her stance, holding a bokken in front of her in two hands and swinging it in time to the drills that he’d taught her. 

He laughed softly, presumably at her expression - halfway between anger and forcing herself to stay neutral. She never was good at keeping a poker face.

Okita walked behind her, examining her stance, poking her occasionally to make minor adjustments, but for the most part, he seemed pleased with the way she was carrying herself.

“Yer also learning to keep yer cool, that’s good.”

Admittedly, the fire that had immediately been stoked when he mentioned Kaito complaining about her had been softened by Okita’s laughter. Aoko was used to being reactive and angry about most things - especially when someone laughed at her expense. 

When Okita laughed, however, it gave her pause. He was trying to rile her up, sure, but his laughter didn’t carry the same kind of pointed cruelty that others did.

It made new, unfamiliar feelings bubble up in her chest. 

She could deal with cruelty and jabs at her - she was used to that. She was the dirty-kneed, childish daughter of the Inspector who kept failing to catch Kaitou KID. She was used to Kaito teasing her, used to being the subject of others insults about her father and her family. She used it as fuel, never letting her guard down.

She was not used to Okita.

A small smile formed on her lips as she swung her bokken, shifting her stance to take a step forward without prompting, recalling what they had practised just hours before. Her smile split into a large grin as she heard Okita hum approval from behind her.

… It wouldn’t hurt to get used to this, though.
