In Japanese folklore, Ōkubi are yōkai who appear as giant heads who appear in the sky shortly before a natural disaster. They can appear as male or female, and are said to be protective sky spirits, or the ghosts of people who have died during natural disasters.

The Ōkubi will disappear soon after appearing, and have heralded tsunamis, tornadoes, earthquakes and fires in the past, preventing dozens from dying.

Modern hakata belt, with the following youkai pattern: bakeneko (two tails cat), chochin obake (lantern ghost), wanyudo /or/ katawaguruma (flaming wheel), okubi (floating head), karakasa kozo (umbrella ghost).

Those monsters are scattered among humans skulls, maybe as a mekurabe ghost,  maybe as a traditional motif named nozarashi (scattered bones in a field) - echoing the skull obidome by Kisai-ya.

Ōkubi are generally harmless, they often like to scare people and blow their hats or umbrellas off. 

However, it is said that once an ōkubi appears, it is a sign of an impending calamity, like a storm/hurricane, tsunami, earthquake, or fire. 😱 

It is also said that instead of flesh and bones, or a ghostly gas, they are jelly-like and squishy in texture.😦 #japanloverme Art by @chichilittle 🎨

A short little jade runs into the taller girl. The much taller girl. Her neck was longer than the jade was tall. But... She looked sweet. And this jade was free at last from the grasp of her lusus so she waved up at her. "Hello!! Hello, hello, hello."
