Salvaged Storage: Old Filing Cabinets
In the past couple of years I have noticed more and more shops and boutiques utilizing antique filing cabinets for the dual purpose of style and storage/inventory display. Oddly enough, with all the scouting I do at flea markets and antique shops I have never actually come across one. This makes them all the more mythic and alluring to me. So if you ever come across one, do not pass it up; it could completely alter the course of your space (for the better!). Here are some artful examples of thrifted filing cabinets and containers at work in the home, all chosen for the overall look of the space.
The ochre-brown color of the cabinets ties in with the blues and whites creating a laid-back, versatile color palette that evokes sea-side vibes without the limitations of an out-and-out theme.
A double filing box set on an old crate serves as a makeshift bedside table. The stray box under the sink helps to pull it all together. Side note: check out that great framed velvet earring holder!
Another bedside table (I love this idea). Here, a single, antique filing box atop a luggage rack takes the place of a bulky piece of furniture in a tight space.
The three photos above are all from the innovative mind of Swedish lifestyle photographer, Mari Erikkson. These are photos of her personal craft room. And, of course, this style already has a name (why are people so compelled to do this?). "Vintage schoolhouse," they call it. I'm betting, though, that this keen look won't lose impact if warmer, non-classroom elements are incorporated. Just like in poetry, a space should aim to be evocative rather than informative. Too nebulous? Better shown than told.
