Any modern electronic musician owes something to Aphex Twin, aka Richard D. James, one of the most innovative electronic artists of all time. Hailed as a pioneer of early electronic dance music, he started producing music in the early 80s when he was just barely a teenager. Having been a club DJ as well, Aphex Twin was experimenting with rhythms in his hometown of Cornwall, England, while DJs like Larry Levan of Paradise Garage were beat matching disco styles in New York.
The featured track above, "Xtal," is from the breakthrough album, Selected Ambient Works 85-92. At the time of release, Rolling Stones had called it "majestic," and a Pitchfork reviewer had said it was "among the most interesting music ever created with a keyboard and computer." The ambient palette Aphex Twin works with recalls cited influences Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream.
Have a good weekend everybody!
