“So there we were, room ablaze! And your grandfather dearest, my brave knight in shining armour swooped down—” Draco gestured wildly, the back of his rocking chair knocking into Jamie who narrowly avoided spilling hot tea down his shirt, “—and grabbed onto me with those strong arms of his and hoisted me up onto his broomstick, flying us off into the sunset!”
He smoothed down his sleek grey locks that had gotten tangled in his robes amidst his excitement, then turned his attention to the bright silvery eyes peering up at him in wonder.
“Wow, papi Draco, I didn’t know grandpa Harry saved you!” Lily exclaimed, beaming from her spot on the floor.
Jamie rolled his eyes, placing the tea tray on the small table between his parents. He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and held it out to his papa expectantly.
“Thank you, deary,” Draco responded gratefully before blotting his eyes. “Oh, mon chéri, your grandpa Harry saved me in more ways than you could ever know.”
Harry grinned affectionately, placing his hands on his cane for support as he leaned over to give Draco a quick peck.
“Into the sunset? Really, papi? How come I’ve never read about that story in any of my history books?” JJ piped up from where he was slung lazily across the sofa.
“Well, Junior—” Harry began, sipping his tea.
“Grandpa, please, it’s JJ.”
“—there are many stories from the war that never made it into your textbooks.”
“And not for a lack of trying!” Draco added. “I think those interviewers started to tune out any story I told that involved me riding on Harry’s broomstick, if you know what I mean.”
Harry sputtered on his tea, then nodded emphatically.
JJ buried his face in his hands, grumbling.
“I am begging you to stop.”
Lily tilted her head in puzzled contemplation.
“What’s wrong with grandpa’s broomstick?”
Jamie frowned, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Absolutely nothing, sweetheart,” Draco nodded solemnly, “it’s fantastic, best I’ve ever had.”
“Alright, I think that’s enough story time for tonight, say goodnight Lils,” Jamie groaned.
After goodnight hugs and kisses had been given and the kids were off to bed, Harry turned to Draco with a sly smile spread across his face.
“So…” he drawled, “your knight in shining armour, eh? I seem to recall you shoving me off that broomstick the second we hit the ground.”
“Well obviously,” Draco snorted, “You risked your life for me then landed tangled in my arms. I was about three seconds away from snogging you senseless!”
“That’s a fair point. The wizarding world thanks you for your impressive amount of self control.”
“As they should! Now,” Draco sighed, slapping his hands on his knees as he stood slowly with a groan. “How about we go to bed and I’ll give you a demonstration of what I would’ve done had you not had to go defeat that old noseless fart.”
He provided his arm for Harry to hold onto as they made their way leisurely down the corridor to their room, taking their time to admire the photos of family and friends that lined the walls.
They were in no rush—they had all the time in the world.
