Tony Drabble
Wed Me: I’ll write a drabble about our character under the subject of wedlock (Best Man)
To say Bruce was nervous would be an understatement. Marriage was something he’d given up on a long time ago, and never in a million years did he think he’d be just minutes away from vowing to spend the rest of his life with his high school sweetheart; yet here he was doing just that. Marriage had seemed the most natural course of action for them, like something that had been a long time coming or an event they had slowly been working towards their whole lives, they said timing was everything and at this point in their lives the timing had finally matched up for the both of them. Deep down he knew this was the best decision he’d make in his life, the second being actually asking Janet to marry him; and wasn’t sure why he was nervous. Maybe it was the big ceremony(between their family, friends, and teammates it was practically a high school reunion), maybe it was the gravity of the commitment he was about to make, maybe it was the fact that he hadn’t been allowed to see Janet at all this morning or afternoon, and his doubts were getting the best of him.
Sitting down on a chair in the small church room he let out a sigh. Janet had gone all out for the wedding, every detail and flower strategically chosen for one reason or another. Bruce had been a part of the process but mainly left the decision making to Janet, it being more her forte. The only thing Bruce had been allowed to choose on his own was his best man, and really their was no question about who that would be.
Feeling the small tumbler being pressed into his hand Bruce looked up at Tony. “If anyone ever needed a drink to take the edge off I’d say it was you about now.” Raising his glass to Bruce, Tony took a gulp.
“I thought you’d given up on drinking.” Bruce commented to his friend.
“Who said anything about me drinking, this is seltzer.” He pointed to his glass, “That” finger now in the direction of Bruce’s drink, “is not, and even if you were still the lightweight when it came to drinking that you were in high school, one drink won’t make you anymore drunk then you are now. I've never used the term love drunk in my life, but if anyone is it's you for Janet." here he made a face like he'd eaten something too sweet. "You just need something to loosen you up.”
Bruce laughed taking a sip, his drinking days were cut short long before he even got to enjoy them because of the Hulk, but unlike Tony who had to avoid all drinking now that he was finally sober, Bruce could have a drink or two so long as he didn’t loose control over himself. He rarely drank though; one of the few people who he would do it with was now a regular at AA.
“You know, I don’t really get the whole marriage thing.” Tony said leaning against the wall, “one person for the rest of your life, settling down. I could never do it. It seems like too much work.”
“I thought the purpose of the best man was to help calm the nerves, not make them worse.” Bruce laughed from his seat.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m getting to that part.” Tony rolled his eyes, “What I mean is that I don’t see the point of marriage, but if their were two people who were meant to end up married to each other it would be you and her.”
Bruce smiled, even after all these years it was nice to know he had his friend's support. He’d learned from the past, and remembered to ask Tony for Janet’s hand before even picking out a ring. The two were like a set package, and Bruce was glad to have both of them in his life.
“Wait. Does this make us brother-in-laws now?” Bruce asked finally relaxing.
Tony laughed, “We were always bros, now it’s just official." he patted Bruce on the back taking the unfinished drink from his hands, “Come on it’s best not to keep the bride waiting; and it’s about damn time you made an honest woman of my sister.”
