A Truth to Tell

Raindrops beat down upon his coniferous shelter, driving through his thin cloak and soaking Jaskier to the bone. Fingers freezing, white, numbed, he tucked them under the edges of the material, hoping for some small pocket of warmth to reveal itself. No such luck.

    Shivering, teeth chattering violently together, Jaskier huddled further into himself, knees curled to his chest. Water ran down his face and dripped into his eyes, leaving him to blink foggily into the twilight gloom.

    On his back, strapped tightly under his cloak, his lute cowered in its case. Distantly, the worry of water-damage ruining his beautiful instrument poked at his mind, but Jaskier was too muddled to focus on it. He’d been travelling for days, and while he wasn’t too hungry, he was incredibly cold.

    Ever since Geralt had yelled at him on that mountain, told him to leave, Jaskier had been surviving by himself. Though it hadn’t been pleasant, he’d been building fires, cooking his own catches, sleeping with one eye open and avoiding Nilfgaardian soldiers. Now, stuck in the downpour, he was exhausted, alone and miserable.

    Being an elf – a secret he’d kept well from Geralt, though one he regretted keeping now – he was skilled at surviving in nature. While he gave off an air of incompetence, it was all in his act. Of course he could hunt. Of course he could fight. What use would an elf be that didn’t have those skills? The differences was, between Jaskier and his people, that Jaskier didn’t like hunting things, he didn’t like hiding from people, and he certainly didn’t like the brutality of sword-craft.

The Novelty of a Viscount

Waking up was a chore, his eyes stuck fast together. It took what felt like hours to peel them apart, wincing at the pain as he did so. Cursing himself internally – he was a witcher, he was meant to be strong enough to ignore a slight sting – he wrestled himself upright, groaning loudly when he felt the pain blooming bright like a flower across his chest.

    Surprising him further, gentle hands reached out, grasping his shoulders and urging him back down. A familiar voice hushed him, soothing him back into the pillow, and in his confused, hazy state, Lambert let them. It had been so long since anyone had touched him so soothingly, so kindly, and it was hard to resist their directions. Even healers, people who took a vow to heal, to do no harm, often treated witchers with only the bare minimum required of them by their profession.

    Pressed back against downy pillows, propped further upright than he had been against the headboard, Lambert took the opportunity to peer around the room.

Feral Creatures and Thunderstorms

Rain pelted Eskel as he forced his way through the storm, Scorpion wearily trudging behind him. The drops were the size of peas, and the only upside Eskel could find was that the water was warm enough. It was a summer storm, after all.

    However, the rain had come on almost too fast to be natural, barely any humidity hailing it in. Lightning flashed, illuminating the path ahead, a path that was now churned and ankle-deep in mud, no longer the gentle dusty road Eskel and Scorpion had been walking along together.

    Worse, there was no shelter. Barely a bush lined the sides of the road, open moorland stretching vast and empty on either side of them. In the distance, a lightning flashed, fire caught, and then dimmed, the rain suffocating it’s light. It was for the best, Eskel knew. Better the rain put the fire out than have it rage across the moor, eating any living thing that came before it.

    Sighing, Eskel kept his head ducked, one arm raised to protect his face from the lashing of the rain. He could barely peer around his arm, so close was it pushed to his head from the howling wind, but he and his horse pressed on. They could not be out in the open in a storm. It was far too dangerous.

    Gritting his teeth, Eskel dropped his elbow, dashed his sodden hair from his eyes. It didn’t help his visibility, but it meant he was no longer squinting against the irritation. Taking a deep breath through his nose, he prepared to continue onwards. But then he paused, stilled, tilted his nose forward and sniffed again. There was something in the air, something living but not animal… It was sweat and blood and life… Human (Ish).

Misunderstandings Abound

    “What?” he asked eventually, almost snappish. He hadn’t meant to sound like that, but Dean could be so annoying sometimes, especially when he was acting like he knew something Sam didn’t. “What are you shaking your head like that for?”

    “Come on, Sammy,” Dean’s grin was teasing. Grimy windows didn’t let in all that much light, and the sconces weren’t doing a very good job of lighting the room, but Dean’s grin was brilliantly bright, enough that it brought some sunshine into the room itself. It made Sam suspicious. “You can’t tell me you don’t see it.”

    “See what?” Sam asked, wanting to flop backwards. He couldn’t, still perched upon his chair, but he let himself imagine just briefly falling backwards chair and all, sprawling on the ground and laying there limply for a while. After the hunt they’d just had, it would be a kind of comfort, a kind of prize. Relaxation. It sounded nice. “Dean, it was just Cas.”

    Silently, Sam hoped Dean didn’t notice Sam’s feelings for Castiel. If his brother knew how Sam felt for him, he’d never be able to live it down. Dean’s teasing would come from all sides, all the time. While Sam knew that it was Dean’s way of saying he was okay with it, that he didn’t mind, it would still be awkward and embarrassing, not to mention Sam would fear Castiel ever overhearing. Sam wasn’t stupid; he knew that if Castiel ever found out how Sam felt, how ‘the Boy with the Demon Blood’ felt about him, he’d run screaming for the hills. Or maybe he’d just take Sam out. Sam didn’t know.

    “I know it was Cas,” Dean was still smirking, crows feet crinkling at the corners of his eyes. “But Man, did you see the look on his face? He’s got it bad.”

Gifts Can Show Affection

“Hey, Samshine!” Gabriel’s voice rang out through the halls of the Bunker, cheerful as it always was. Ever since they’d rescued Gabriel from Asmodeus when Castiel had come to them after dealing with Metatron, claiming that the archangel was still alive, he’d stayed with them. At first he was recovering from his grace loss and injuries, but after that he’d just stuck around, claiming that they needed someone on their side with power, if they were going up against that ‘douchewad’ Metatron. From then on, Gabriel had stuck to Sam like glue. That day was no exception. “I have something for you.”

    Hiding in the library, Sam groaned quietly into his book. It wasn’t that he didn’t like Gabriel; he actually had a bit of a thing for the archangel, something that he was definitely not labelling love. They’d made up after Gabriel had apologised for the Mystery Spot incident, and had drawn closer after Gabriel had displayed such extreme outrage over Sam going to Hell with Lucifer and Michael that Cas had had to come and tell him to calm down, as his rumbling grace had been scaring Sam just a little (a lot).

    From there, their relationship had grown. At first, Dean had been pretty pissed by it, annoyed that Sam could stand to look at the Trickster when he’d treated Sam so cruelly over the Mystery Spot incident. While Dean couldn’t remember anything that happened, he knew how Sam had been after it, knew how bad it must have been to make Sam act that way, and he hadn’t ever forgiven the archangel entirely.

    Over time, Dean had lessened his dislike towards the angel into distaste, turning his nose up every time he saw Sam and Gabriel spending time together. He’d tease Sam about his regard for Gabriel, asking Sam if he really had to pick that angel, out of all of them. Sam wondered if teasing Dean about his thing for Donna (the blonde sheriff they’d met whilst hunting Pishtacos) would get Dean to stop, but he never actually did it. So long as Dean wasn’t outright angry or vile about Sam’s desire and – not love, it wasn’t love – for Gabriel, he would let Dean’s teasing continue.

What You Choose to Do With It

In the darkness behind his eyes, Sam could feel a pressure building. It felt like something was squeezing in his head, filling to the point of bursting and then beyond. When it finally did burst, he sat up with a gasp, hands flying to curl into his scruffy locks. Blinking the dark away, he shifted one hand from his hair, down over his sweat-slick skin and onto the fabric of his t-shirt. His fingers pressed into his chest, trying to soothe his wild-running heart. Behind him, his other hand twisted into the sheets, fingers clawing tightly at the rumpled material.

    Slowly, his breathing became less laboured, his eyes roaming the room less wildly. Calmer, but still tense, he searched the room, eyes darting from corner to corner, shadow to shadow, desperate to ensure that no red eyes were staring out at him. When his search of the room came up clean, he heaved a sigh of relief and buried his face in his hands. Curling forward, eyes screwed shut tight and fingers digging into them, he tried to shake the last vestiges of his nightmare from his mind.

    After a few minutes, he finally felt calm enough to uncover his face.

    It was dark in his room, darker than it ordinarily would be.
