The small, low-growing Anagallis arvensis (scarlet pimpernel, shepherd's weatherglass, old man's weathervane) has survived the harvest. This annual wildflower can be found in arable fields and gardens (including my gravel driveway), on coastal cliffs, roadside verges and chalk downlands. The flowers are usual red and occasionally blue, they close when atmospheric pressure falls and stormy weather approaches so resulting in some of their country names.
