and yes, my first cosplay -- as a tiny tot before I knew the word "cosplay" -- was AS the alien, for Halloween:

My dad made this outfit (I sort of helped) out of papier-mâché from nothing but memories of the film and some tiny pics from Starlog magazine. The eyes lit up when I raised my arms (mercury switch strapped to my wrist) and the teeth would bite when I blew into a tube hanging in front of my mouth (plastic vampire teeth glued onto an armature moved by a balloon). At the time I just thought it was cool, but I suspect there's a therapeutic effect of cosplaying as the monster that gives you nightmares. Something something power to turn our fears into our strengths something.
