It had been a comment that was supposed to be laughed at or shrugged off, he said it before drinking from his mug. The answer had him lift his eyes from the mug and stare at his brother with an attentive, yet blank expression. “You don’t?” The question was genuine, thinking that in some shape or form, Geralt enjoyed the attention he’d get as the White Wolf and many other titles he had collected over the years.
He kept quiet as Geralt continued talking, rubbing at his scar from time to time as he followed each phrase. Eskel knew that the life his brother led was exhausting, but he also thought that there were times where all that exhaustion was worth it to him. He rested his scarred cheek on his hand, a calloused finger rubbing at it from time to time as he continued hearing the other’s monologue, something that didn’t bother Eskel, on the contrary, he was always glad to hear what was in his brother’s mind.
And when he finally finished, Eskel arched an eyebrow. “Of course you don’t mean it, Wolf. Otherwise, you would have stopped doing it long ago. And if you didn’t do any of this, you’d still have me and Lambert. The only difference would be you’d be another simple witcher, like me. But that’s not what you were meant to do.” He shrugged and ordered another drink from the waitress, mildly apologising for being startled.
He finished his mug, his golden eyes on Geralt as he heard his question and pondered on it for a moment. “What else can we do, Wolf? We raised for this, there’s nothing else out there for us. Do you know how to bake? How to manage a store? That’s not what we are meant to do. As much as it’s not what we wanted, it’s what we got, and we have to do what we can with it.” He shrugged again before a smirk tugged at the corners of his mouth. “But I tried.” He spoke quietly but knew his brother would hear. “I tried doing something else. Many years ago… I think eighty years ago? Give or take. We had just gotten our medallions and for some reason, I had decided I didn’t want any of that anymore, so I went to Novigrad. Worked as a store keeper for eight months. Had to get back on the Path before I bored myself to death.”
Eskel smiled at the memory of himself as a young stupid witcher thinking he could just ignore what he was. “Maybe we could have been a part of society once, but not anymore, Wolf... Although, knowing you I wouldn’t be surprised if you could pull it off.”
