Ever since quarantine began I told myself I needed to write more and to do some worldbuilding for the project I started to think about 2 years ago. I wrote a quick thing about about how I wanted magic to work, and what would be the consequences. Since every kin and races I have in mind is related to a god I’ll just tag the god/goddess/entity name for everything related to them and their people/city/cultures/yada
The principles and dangers of magic Magic in our Empire has always been the heart of our society. It has always been used as much during the War that in our everyday life. But pyromancy is specific to us, and us only. The people the Gods can only master what their God gave them. Our goddess Oveliene gave our blood the strength to tame the Fire itself, when Rashleen gave her children the power to give birth the Earth itself. Magic isn’t always elementary, and can be born of a concept as well. For instance, the children of Alduna master the Time itself, and the people of Rena eat the Shadows themselves. Magic is a latter of blood, and of Gods. But it is also a matter of will, and good sense. Here, pyromancy is used every day, and is taught at a very young age. We teach young children that magic is something that they can catch and drink like the rain so they can visualize it more easily, but it is false. Magic is a muscle, present in all of us, and that require strength and training. Not only does this muscle need to be toughened, but it can also melt, disappear with the lack of practice. We run and practice so our legs and arms are stronger, and so must be our magic. Giving birth to flames around our fingers, setting fire to a load of woods, every little exercise is useful. But magic can also be dangerous when one use it without care. Indeed, magic can consume the user, just like fire can consume woods. If one isn’t careful enough, Fire itself can consume them, until ashes is all that remains of them. You will see many Senators wearing gloves, or covering some parts of their arms: it is because they can be consumed by Fire. In the wild, Fire feed upon woods, weeds, dry grounds. When magic call upon Fire, it consumes the user itself, burning their flesh, eating their bones if they’re not careful enough. I am sure you must have heard already the screams that you can hear from times to times, coming from the Tower of Ashes, and resonating throughout the city. The Tower fill a sad duty; the duty of watching those who are being eaten alive by the Fire and who are beyond saving. Those who are lucky dies, leaving only ashes behind them. The unluckiest become monstrosities of Fire, whose body leaves trail of ash and blood behind them, that only a Senator could vanquish. This sickness of Fire, that we named the Ashen Body, can reach such extent only when the user uses their magic blindly, until the Fire and its burning marks consume body and minds. The Chamber tried to find a cure, a way for those people, but it seems that the sicknesses of magic are uncurable. Some Senators, among their other duties, are assigned to the tower, though many leaves after a few months. The one in charge of the whole Tower is also a Senator, whose name is Lelia Iveliora Enedini, working closely with the Chamber, in hope to find a way to help the people that the Fire eats, though most of the time she fill the sad duty of ending their pain and madness as quickly as possible Those who has already visited the Tower must have seen her already. She’s a powerful pyromancer, but never did she let Fire overcome her, and you must never as well. -Extract of a lesson given by Orene Lionte, teacher to the Chamber.
